The Sierra Club is the latest group to propose a tax on video games and televisions with the procceds going to programs that encourage families to get off the couch and hike in the mountains.

Mike Casaus from the Sierra Club says, "What we would do with this excise tax on tvs and video games and this type of equipment is to tax part of the problem to fund the solution."

The Sierra Club believes that the bill would bring in about $4 million to be used on programs. The story is reported from KOB.com in New Mexico. It is unclear if the tax is being proposed in other states.

I have written the Sierra Club to give them a chance to show the reasons behind the tax. Lawmakers did kill the same idea last year, but it looks like the Sierra Club is going to give it another go.

Reason 9999999999999 to register and get out there and vote gamers!

Why don't these damn hippies tax McDonalds or something...

why can't they go hike those trails themselves and leave me and my light-sensitive eyes and easy-to-burn skin indoors?

What do you think the Hippies are high on, Drugs?

This kind of reminds me of Honda's ad campaign encouraging parents to "unplug their kids" and go out and ride a Quad or bike. I find a huge irony in discouraging game playing in favor of riding ATVs which are very dangerous to youngsters. This approach by the Sierra Club is an odd angle to approach it. I would think they would rather promote hiking by teaming up with outdoor shops rather then taxing games.

I thought it was that fresh air. If it isn't that, why do they go outside?

Because they feel they have to keep telling us our way of life is always wrong and their way of life is always right.

Kinda odd. They tax something to get people to buy less of it yet use funds from said thing to fund their program.

Interesting Link regarding the Sierra Club:

Anyways, I wish I had some more links about them but can't remember any right now. From off-roading I've had many dealings with members of this group and there are some inconsistancies with their postions. They say they want Children out-doors, but at the same time want to limit new developments and have fought hard against developments where houses would include yards and such, historically they have favored high-density building which disturbs less land which wild-life inhabit.

At any rate, I hate environmentalists. Check out This (http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/publications/slideshows/surprise/index.htm) propaganda, where they claim that off-roaders impact the stream in spite of a BLM study that says otherwise. (http://www.fopv.org/ADCthemes/partner7/FOPVCustomTheme/pdfArticles/water_study.pdf) I guess actual science always loses to LOUD VOICES.

I'm pretty sure it would take a lot of dedicated off-roaders to equal the amount of damage some livestock can do to a stream.

Right. I think the most interesting thing about the study I linked is they found 0 hydrocarbons in the water, even I would have thought that some oily residue would have been on somebody's tires or shoes on the PVD run. Suppose it just shows how well people maintain their vehicles.

To play devil's advocate, I think it has more to do with the fact that fast food and electronic entertainment each have higher ad expenditure than "outside" and healthy foods by a few factors of 10. Probably has something to do with profits or some crazy evil corporate stuff like that. And if you can't get people to give up money voluntarily, why not just take it from them for the public good?

But in all seriousness, if that's allowed, I like "outside." It has awesome graphic and realistic physics. While, frankly, staying inside is probably better for the environment than driving 100 miles for a day hike, I think the Sierra Club generally thinks that more people going outside = more people caring about more than their own immediate gratification.

It's all for Children, The, Children, Children's, et al.

In my experience, it's full of griefers nobody's really doing anything about. And don't get me started on permadeath. ;P

Yeah, but you get all that even hiding in your room, and without going outside, you never get a chance to level up or do any of the really cool quests ;)

Then why do they work against other orgs who have actively been trying to get kids outdoors (http://www.cal4wheel.com/voyagers/Page%203.htm) for years? Especially when they attempt to do whats best for the environment as well? (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/14/detroit-2008-jeep-renegade-concept/)

Why do they spread propaganda and lies? (http://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/200711/orv.asp)

Yeah, Oceano Dunes is full of morons. Always has been, far back as the 60s. If you don't understand why that article pissed me off, imagine if someone wrote about Gamers and used "GTA-inspired murderers", Fanboys and b-tards as the only examples.
