(this is the thread from the "the Politics" line of the forum, I moved it here because more people will get a look in on this forum)

Hello guys, I am working on a few essays and speeches to deliver to the press and politicians who have been hounding our entertainment for donkey's years, I have figured that if we can get a few people to write out their angle on the situation we may have a case, I don't want this to be a flame spree, people telling fox news that they suck etc, but I would like the honest opinions of gamers with an IQ in at least double figures so we can put our feelings out there.

Up until now there has been no one fighting our corner in the videogame world, we are the people who are there as a convinient punching bag for people who want to get a step up in the world, be it politicians looking for a scapegoat, the news looking to get their ratings up by playing the blame game or the high school bully who is convinced that those kids playing videogames are nerds and they need beating up to convince it.

We have been labelled murderers, freaks, fools and fatties, we are stereotyped and attacked by the people who we work with, in the words of Tyler Durden (fight club) "You are the all singing, all dancing crap of the world", but I say no, we are the elite, we are the people with something good in our lives, we enjoy what we do and we will fight to defend it, if that makes us lower than human than I suggest that these people read some history, for to my knowledge, we have done nothing that deserves the animosity that we recieve from the uneducated, you see on FOX news webcasts, people shunning games then claiming that their knowledge of the situation comes from "very reliable sources" yet have not been involved with our medium of entertainment since the days of pong, so how are they qualified to pass judgement on something they do not even understand? I for one believe that judgement should be given by people who have an understanding of the situation and not people who have been fed the information through sensationalist media.

So gamers on this forum, I would ask this of you: open up MS word or whatever word processing tool which you prefer, get writing and put something useful here for us to give to the people who can change things!

I do not know how far this will go, but I know this: our cause isn't lost and we need to fight to keep it that way, and if possible fight some more to see that it is no longer a cause that we have to fight for, make the folks in number 10 or the white house know that it is a part of modern life that they must accept, how a parent chooses to raise their child should not be influenced by the government, it is the job of the parents to understand the ratings system and adhere to it, they also must accept that the world is changing, old ways are dying, in the next 20 years the media should be working on finding a new scapegoat which we, as parents will probably go all up in arms about, and the circle of hate will move on, something that I honestly hope does not happen, but right now we are powerless to stop, so let us at least fight for what we want, for what we have as part of our lives and tell the government, the news stations and all associated people that it is time for them to can it and accept the will of the people who got them in their current position in the first place.

My name is Ben, I am 16 years old, and I am a gamer, I have been one for in excess of 10 years now, 2008 marks the fourth anniversary of my gamer profile "Pominator" and I ask you all to let me see it through another four years, this is the responsibility that we, as gamers need to take otherwise we will be chewed up by the political/media machine, that we have empowered for so long, this weekend I will start my own essay and post it here, if you get to work on something too then we may have something to go on, come on people!

By the way does anyone find it odd that people neglect to post here?

Not so much as a lack of people posting is that most people do not actively get involved in activism regarding video games. There are many opinions on video game issues, and how to deal with them. While most people agree with freedom of speech issues, not everyone is in agreement on particulars. So while you may get a lot of readers of your idea, you may or may not get a lot of discussion due to the fact that many of the regulars have been over most of the details ad nauseum.

yeah I guess, I would just like the intelligent people (Nightwing, BlackIce, yourself, Iceman, Kurisu) and others to put something forward, just to test/guage what sort of reaction we get (if any) because it would be nice to see our kind acknowledged as actual people with a valid opinion

I have been considering doing some grass roots work here in Oklahoma. Unfortunately I do not have the time to do all I want.

I am, however, working on a full blown report on ratings trends in video games and movies and how that cycles through to retail and then to parents.

My goal is to put together a comprehensive review of the studies, research and reports from all over the US.

This comes from the idea that people believe that video games are a children's medium and that it is being invaded by adult oriented content.

I have been getting a lot of help from the ESRB on the number of games rated and the percentage of ratings from each category for the last few years.

The MPAA on the other hand is another story. I have sent multiple emails and have yet received a reply. A phone call is next.

So I am doing something. It may not ammount to anything big happening in the end, but I plan on sending the information to as many news outlets and politicians as possible.

Well on a good note since this is now officially the ECA forums you might start seeing more activism.

It would be good to see some proactiveness from the ESA. I still think that we need someone at the forefront to write counter articles to things like the recent PTC press release.

I think a big part of our problem as a community is that the instant we see something like what was written, the more immature among our number tend to freak out and start cursing people. That doesn't help our case at all. I think we need someone, or a group of people who are eloquent enough that they can get their point across without swearing. People who can reason and maybe help to enlighten those who don't hear anything but one side of the argument.

What we need is for people to understand that not only are age ratings important and that all games are not aimed at children, but there are also mentality differences, for example

I am a 16 year old gamer, I am always polite and eloquent when playing on xbox live, I play well with most people, there are some players who are whiny, the young players who should not even own the game in the first place, they are annoying and loud (thank god for the mute button!) And they are supposedly the definition of "gamer"... odd I know! Then there are young players who are very careful, not using bad language and announcing that "I have school tomorrow, best for me to turn off now", from a child this is remarkable, it shows real discipline.

However on the other side of the coin I have 25 -40 year old gamers who can be civil and polite when playing, but other times I have run into people who just make me want to shoot something, I have seen 37 year old men shouting "GET THAT BITCH NIGGER!!" when playing Kane and Lynch, when he was asked to calm his language down he responded by calling the rest of our team "Nigger lovers" and decided to blow us all up with his grenade, then wait for our respawn as cops to just sit and attempt to gun us down whilst calling us every variation of the phrase "filthy black person" that I could imagine.

So how is it that we have some extremely disciplined children online who will play politely and give the child side of gaming a good name and yet we have adults who seem to be KKK members and just love to shout and swear?

Because people like this are misrepresenting our culture, and these are the people who we need rid of, and we definitely should point out in our collab that these people do not represent the gaming culture, they are merely people who play videogames for the fun of being annoying and shooting people, not people who appreciate the art form that is gaming.
