Pretty much, if the average reception of something is greater then what someone thinks it deserves then that person considers it overrated.

Depends. For as many arguments people make for indie rock being the solution to soulless commericial rock...an equal amount of folk could point you towards the countless amounts of Myspace bands spawned because of said "movement".

Note: It's an analogy, albeit a slanted one. I hates me the indie rock.

Then it's not over or under rated. It's value is just disputed, for something to be overrated or underrated it has to be cleary slanted. I.E. If someone doesn't like FF VII they say it's overrated. If someone :shudders: likes E.T. they would say it's underrated. At least that's how I see it.

FFVII is over-rated in that it is not the answer to all of life's problems. Halo is over-rated as it is not the second coming of Jesus Christ.

As far as indie goes, it's in dispute, but just because something is indie does not make it good. I'm an indie humorist, does that make me better than the mainstream George Carlin? Hell no.

In fact, I'm so indie that my shirt don't fit. You wonder out loud "thefremen why you come so ill-equipped?" bbbbbecause being prepared to type is something I aint even about lest I lose my indie clout....

Someone saying that fritos and ranch dip is over-rated is someone just being a hater, or a jackass.

Things become over-rated when people start calling it the "bestest thing evar" and people all jump on the bandwagon, ignoring all criticism about it.

Good examples are Final Fantasy 7 for video games and Evangelion for anime.

If we use that interpretation, then there are a lot of misusings of the word.

I can see that. People also use "dispute" as if there is an absolute answer to one's personal preference as compared to another. IE: My God is greater than yours, etc.

I'm not saying that Overated is not one of the most misused word on the internet. Not as bad as most of the japanese words on anime/manga forums, but pretty damn close.

Actually, FF8 is quite underated and people should talk about it more rather then less, as it introduced many concepts which should still be used in RPG development (GF junction system if it was refined, weapon upgrade system...)

And FFX is hardly overated (except at the release). People actually see the good and bad points in this game, and is compared to other games in his category for criticism.

Mmm I guess your right,its not like anything will change how square makes stuff they have become to well protected from any damage a "bad" game can do.

I get so annoyed at people that see only the good side of a FF game and wont admit it fails in some aspects...
