Hong Kong - A Hong Kong father has been prosecuted for leaving his daughter alone in the street while he played video games in an arcade, a news report said Saturday. Single father Chan Sing, 31, left the girl alone in the street for an hour after staff told him children were not allowed inside the arcade, the South China Morning Post reported.

He then sat her in a restaurant with a drink for three more hours while he continued playing games before staff called police to track down the father.

When he was arrested, Chan told police: "I have to play video games," Kowloon City Court was told Friday.

Chan admitted to child abuse and was ordered to do 120 hours of community service.

I dare say someone is gonna get some mileage out of this story :/

I hate it when people to stupid stuff like that. It gives politicians ammo to throw at the gaming community as a whole. They don't take into account that that guy is insane... or has terrible judgement. (one of the two)

cultural considerations:
1) it's China
2) it was a daughter

not saying it's right, but in his mind he may not have left a son in the same situation.

I don't care about what this'll give Thopson. I'm more worried about the fact that a man left his daughter in the street on her own. You don't let your child out of your sight FULL STOP.

Actually, it's Hong Kong. And while they're now considered Chinese territory, to a certain extent, they're still a different culture.

Though that doesn't change the fact that the dad featured in the report is scum.

This sort of thing is why I'm still not convinced it's not impossible to get addicted to games, though 'video games' is a vague term at best, do they mean he was shooting aliens for 4 hours, or do they mean he was using gambling machines that took the form of video games? Could there have been a whole different addiction at play here?

Wish there were more details.

Exactly. Although it was Hong Kong, but as I understand it that difference means about as much as Hawaii and Mainland US. The Hong Kong folks I've chatted with either have no recolection of Tienamen Square or think it was a perfectly rational reaction on the part of the government.
