It's quite rare, so it needs to be mentioned. A president of a French game retailers association (who is also gamer and game journalist) decided to go into politics. Right now, he is campaigning for being the mayor of a small town in the North of France.

Meet David Hecq (http://www.davidhecq.fr/). He is the president of the AFRS (Association Française de Revendeurs Spécialisés) (http://www.afrs.fr/) (for "French specialized retailers association". It is a nonprofit game retailers association, independent from game industry. They are called "specialized retailers", first because this association regroups stores that sell video games only, second because it doesn't include big retailing companies whose stores are found in most big French towns (such as Micromania, Score Games and Dock Games) . The AFRS regroups only independent retailers who have their own business in selling games. David Hecq also created video game site Objectif Micro (http://www.objectifmicro.org/) in 1996. This website provides informations about game retailers, and also reviews of games and game systems.

As municipal elections to elect city mayors and councillors will be held in 2008, Hecq decided to focus on his campaign to be mayor of Anzin Saint-Aubin (http://www.anzin-saint-aubin.com/), 2500 inhabitants, a former village that became a town. It is located in the North of France. Elections will happen in 2008, for all French towns and villages. Hecq is not affiliated to any existing political party.

So OK, it's not presidential elections, and it's not the biggest town in the World. But it's really a news in which "politics and video games collide", and I wanted to share it with you.

I've just learnt that David Hecq was elected mayor.

Last sunday march 9th, there were municipal elections in France. And Hecq's team "Pour Anzin-Saint-Aubin : une nouvelle équipe pour de nouvelles ambitions" (litterally, "For Anzin-Saint-Aubin : a new team for new ambitions") received 57.18% of votes, against 42.82% for the former mayor's team. Details are shown on Hecq's campaign blog (http://www.davidhecq.fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=69&Itemid=2) (in French).

Note that David Hecq is not a newbie. Aged 34, father of two, he's been municipal employee for 12 years (he left last year). Local newspapers (such as this one (http://www.lobservateurdelarrageois.fr/actualite/viewArticle.php?idArticle=243)) mentioned the feud between him and former mayor Philippe Salomé (who had been elected and re-elected easily since 1983). After all, their styles and attitudes are completely different. Salomé even refused to debate directly with him.

According to Hecq (quotes taken from an interview in French (http://elections.lavoixdunord.fr/2008/02/02/david-hecq-aimerait-detroner-philippe-salome/), given before the elections and crudely translated in English by myself) "Philippe Salomé did a good job until 2001 [when he was re-elected for the last time]. But since then, it was the over-the-top mandate. There were way too many anomalies in management and even in the mayor's attitude (...) Inhabitants of Anzin Saint-Aubin have the right to more transparency. After 25 years, the same old routine was installed. I know I am the challenger. Philippe Salomé has always been re-elected easily. In 1983, he was elected for the first time while he was as young as me, with an unknown team. I hope a similar scenario for myself in march. We need to bring new blood".

David Hecq is also credited for the creation of games retail store Objectif Games, which became Ultima Games, a chain of stores located in many French towns.

Um... not sure France is gonna be "the new mecca for games". Of course, there are a lot of game-friendly politicians, but they're not necessarily the ones who have the most power. Other ones jumped on the Rule of Rose moral panic bandwagon. Plus, the way games (and other things) have been portrayed by French mainstream media is horrifying.

We can just continue to colonise the south of France.

For once, the readers of The Daily Mail have it right!
