Cornell University (http://www.cornell.edu) is a world-class Ivy League university that offers a multitude of outstanding degree programs.

In Fall 2001, overwhelming interest in studying games sparked the creation of The Game Design Initiative at Cornell University (GDIAC). This organization is a group of students, faculty, alumni, and community members who are devoted to the establishment of game design as an academic discipline. GDIAC currently offers a Minor in Game Design that is available to all undergraduate students at Cornell.

In the Minor, students take three core courses in game design and development from the College of Computing and Information Sciences along with a choice of three other courses from a variety of fields: computer science and engineering, communication, animation, and visual studies. A unique aspect of GDIAC is that students may continue work through independent studies to expand project portfolios and explore cutting-edge game technology. We offer many other opportunities, such as mentorship, teaching assistant jobs, industry and university collaborations, company hosting, and more.

At The Art Institute of Vancouver, we believe an education in the creative and applied arts should be hands on and practical, not to mention inspiring. It should prepare you for opportunities in the workplace as it gives your ideas and talent a place to take shape. Students in the Game Art & Design and Visual &Game Programming diploma programs build foundation skills, which they apply to the creation of game play and backgrounds and the creation of characters and their environments. Programmers become well-versed in the technical aspects of the game, thus capable of comprehending the intent of the artistic creator and the technical needs and challenges in achieving the intended results of the game designers.

We offer a creative stimulating environment where you can learn what it takes to launch your career. You’ll learn with experienced faculty who practice what they preach, in interesting careers inside and outside of our classrooms. You’ll be exposed to a curricula that’s relevant, thanks to the input of major employers with whom we work. And you’ll get your hands on the technology that will help your good ideas see the light of day. Better yet, you’ll graduate with a portfolio so that you can show potential employers your best work.

At our Burnaby location, you’ll find a creative environment designed to bring out your best. Open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week this location has over 54,000 square feet of class and lab space with a lecture theatre, sound stage, five recording studios and an Internet broadcast studio. Game students have access to the technical and artistic tools needed to develop their talents, and expand and apply their knowledge of video and computer games.

Curriculum is carefully scrutinized and developed by industry leaders and prominent employers who inform The Art Institutes what skills are needed in the workplace. This means that your education is relevant, practical, and hands-on. In fact, the classroom often mimics what you'll find on the job. Deadlines, pitching ideas in front of the class, and working in teams helps you flex those creative muscles. Graduates of the Game Art & Design program have the training and skills to compete for entry-level positions in the game industry, such as game-play tester, 2-D conceptual artist, 3-D character builder, 3-D object modeller, interactivity designer and background artist. Graduates of the Visual & Game Programming program are equipped to create and modify programs/scripts for game levels and to enter into the world of shading development, graphic dynamics, and pipeline streamlining. They will learn programming tools such as Perl, C++, C-shell, Mel scripting, MaxScript, DirectX & OpenGL. Program Overview
The Video Game Development program is designed and developed by leaders in the Austin video game development industry, under the direction of the ACC Video Game Advisory Board. Courses are taught by industry video game developers for those who want to be video game developers. The program offers a comprehensive approach towards learning what's needed to be successful in video game development.

Curriculum
Today's environment for developing video games requires specialized skills and strong teamwork. Consequently, the Video Game Development curriculum provides four areas of specialization: Programming, Art, Design, Production and a team Capstone project. Courses can be taken to obtain the Video Game Development Certificate, or individually. Typically, students will take 2 years to complete the course work, and an additional semester to complete the Capstone project.

Instructors
Instructors who represent the spectrum of the Austin Video Game community teach the courses. These industry professionals are generously sharing the lessons they learned to improve the overall depth of talent in the Greater Austin area.

Video Game Development Certificate
Completion of the certificate requires successfully completing twelve courses and a Capstone project. There are three required industry courses. Each student must have at least six courses in their area of specialization and one of the required courses from each of the other areas of specialization. A major element of the ACC program is the completion of the Capstone project. The project will have students from each of the specialization areas. There will be a mentor to guide the team. The team will have scheduled project reviews with industry representatives. The end result will be a mod or demo suitable for use in students' portfolios.

The Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) at Carnegie Mellon University offers a two-year Masters of Entertainment Technology degree, jointly conferred by Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts and School of Computer Science. Carnegie Mellon is relatively unique among U.S. Universities in being able to offer this kind of degree, as we have both top-quality fine arts and top-quality technology programs.

The high concept behind both the Center and the Masters program is to have technologists and fine artists work together on projects that produce artifacts that are intended to entertain, inform, inspire, or otherwise affect an audience/guest/player/participant. Because the larger challenge we face in authoring in new media is bringing together different disciplines, our degree program is driven by trying to do this most effectively.

The ETC does not turn artists into technologists, or vice-versa. While some students will be able to achieve mastery in both areas, it is not our intent to have our students master 'the other side.' Instead, we intend for a typical student in this program to enter with mastery or training in a specific area and spend his or her two years at Carnegie Mellon learning the vocabulary, values, and working patterns of the other culture. This learning will be evidenced by their ability to work effectively with those who are expert in it.
