I want to thank Kurisu for this idea. Over in the Introduction thread, Kurisu mentioned Deus EX and political commentary by a character in the game. That's when something :: clicked :: in my brain.
Ok, treat this as a reality, movie based, casual simulation game. You might be able to treat it as a reality educational tool as well. But it's a particular aspect of the simulation that makes it a game. Ok, remember that it's a CASUAL game, no explosions or shooting. :)
Think: Barbershop ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303714/ )
The reality simulation part is to actually learn to cut hair in the various styles available. This part actually might be GREAT for the Wii motes.
You also have the business financial aspect to be played. Proper equipment to be maintained. Supplies to be purchased. Rent for the chair. Being paid. Etc.
You also have the music to choose (and if it's out loud, the personalities of the other barbers).
AND... you have Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer). This is where the political conversations come in. Naturally, he's chattering on about important issues, antagonizing the other barbers and even the customers. GREAT background stuff. Personally, he made the entire movies worth it. And it would be nice to update his work from time to time as well, if possible. Kinda like have the talk radio from GTA or Saint's Row (which sadly DOESN'T get updated so it's starting to get old now).
I think it's a pretty simplistic game to make. But still would be a nice moderate to play and learn from. Not to mention hear some great commentary.

Can I stab Ice Cube with scissors? Cause if I can't I have no interest in a game based off a ****ty movie. Just like I have not interest in a ****ty movie based off a game. Honestly I don't want to play a game about cutting people's hair while listening to some loud mouth in the background bitching about the world.

I could see something like that working in a variety of "artisan profession" concepts.
Being a barber is a job but it's more precise and involves more skill then many other professions and at the same time there can be a real level of artistry. Definitely - and tie it together with a solid economic sim/management game and you could have something really compelling. Something like that would also be relatively easy to extend because the developers could regularly offer new neighborhoods to expand into or new competitors or you could even have players' barber shops used as the basis for other competing barber shops - a player starts a shop and builds it up and then another player sees that shop as competition in their neighborhood. Not direct multiplayer or MMO stuff but just casual, dynamic player-created content.
I'm not sure about the political commentary, though, because it would strike me as more of an afterthought then an integral part of the game. The player is just listening to political and social issues rather then being actively involved in them and I don't see that as being more then a movie tie-in gimmick. Perhaps offering personalities of various types who might be attracted to certain shops? Those personalities could even be in the form of podcasts or something similar.
At any rate I like that it's an out-of-the-box concept and I could see it working. Good movie, too.

The idea has some interesting potential.
I see it more as a new way to do pod casts. The customers represent different real life people and the audio track is that person's pod cast.
Kind of interesting to think about.

you just know that Fox will claim that the content of the game is some murder simulating game where you get to trim the "lower hairs" of your clients before stabbing them with your barber blade, because that is what games are all about remember

I like this idea, especially what ezacharyknight said.
I see it [the game] more as a new way to do pod casts. The customers represent different real life people and the audio track is that person's pod cast.
And maybe there could be an IM function. For instance, a friend would come in and you were talking to him while giving his character model a haircut. Ending the conversation was ending the haircut.
PERFECT

A little bit boring though isn't it?
No offence it is a great idea, but my evil homicidal gamer plans should never go unchecked
