Yeah, I had to write a speech for school so I chose video game violence. Tell me what you think:

Why It Is Easy To Blame Video Games

When the Virginia Tech shootings occurred, I knew that they would find some way to blame it on video games. No sooner then the morning after, Jack Thompson, the lawyer most known for crusading against video games, was giving his one reason why it was because of video games. Studies. Every time someone tries to prove their case all he can say is that studies proved it. While failing to mention the specifics of the studies, like how many people were involved or even what the studies were, he seems to hold his ground on almost every debate. The only thing worse then 32 dead and 40 wounded is someone exploiting it for their own gain.
Before going over the facts and instances, I am going to say why video games are such an easy target. The majority of video game players are minors and adults that don’t have much of a voice. They are not part of government, or political, or even paying attention to current events. Another reason is that players don’t have anyone to speak for them. Sure, they can hold their own, but they are all separate. They also seem to enjoy insulting people more then getting facts.
These facts are obvious. I and everyone I know who plays video games have not hurt anyone in their entire life. I don’t know who this unnamed company found, but they sure must have been hard to find. Another reason is that people will always be violent. Video games aren’t going to make world peace. After all their interviews, they couldn’t find one person who said the Virginia Tech shooter played video games. He most likely hadn’t picked up a game in his life.
It isn’t only easy for press and lawyers to blame games. Police can say that the video games did it, case closed. They don’t have to search for their weapons dealers, or find a mental problem. Video games are all the closure they need. The best explanation was that the gun appeared out of thin air and the games enraged the shooter so much he went on a killing spree.
Parents find an easy way out of parenting, also. Instead of looking at what their child is doing, they can say that the store retailer allowed them to buy the game. First of all, I work in a video game store and it is against store rules to sell mature rated games to a minor. Selling them results in an automatic firing. Store owners also have to read aloud why it is rated M to the parents before it can be sold, and they have to ask anyone under 35 for their driver’s license.
The most common reason why kids get M-rated games is because parents are in a hurry and ignore what the retailer says. So instead of blaming themselves, video games are a much easier target. With all the problems in America today, it is hard to believe that video games are such a huge problem. People are comparing games to narcotics and knives. Maybe if they did some research, they could save a lot of time.

If you are not doing this to amuse the voices in your head like zippy dose when he writes I suggest polishing the grammar more some periods and commas seem out of place...but then again I is lopped sided, also it would not hurt to seperate the word block by using paragraphs.

I can see it and see whats wrong kinda...but cant mine when I work on it for days...I suck ><

Questions:
Do you want us to edit/correct anything here?

Have you submitted this already?

While I can agree with the overall message, I don't think you've got enough information in there to support your claims.

Luckily, you've come to the right place. Jack Thompson has visited the site many times, and there are a number of people I would consider excellent sources for this.

Not to mention, the Virginia Tech Shooting-videogames link seems to have been pushed far more by the conspiracy theorist LaRouche group than Jackkie boy, well beyond the official announcements severing that link. Check out the personalities forum... Soldat_Louis has been keeping tabs on the LaRouche rhetoric/insanity.

You are getting close to what I consider the real problem in America, which is a culture of victims served by lawyers. Rather than taking responsibility in Parenting (which is psychologically hard, if your 'precious children' are all 'angels' despite what teachers say), the media portrayal of video games as a cause of violence 'feels' right, and becomes the scapegoat.

Lawyers such as Jack Thompson are all too eager to jump in on that unwarranted blame and try to get suits filed to collect fees.

They are all too willing to ignore the rating system adopted by the industry and set by the ERSB, which shouldn't limit the industry and developers, but the retailers, in selling games to minors.

But this is where even a good merchant, who cards people to see if they're old enough for games rated 'M', can be blamed... if a 'pwecious widdle dawling' tells mummy he wants Killdeathmurderbloodsplatter 3 (Or Manhunt 2) or he'll throw a tantrum, the weak-willed parent will buy it for them, then let them play it just to shut the kid up. And when they finally come back to their senses and see the game's content, they won't admit they are bad parents, and instead blame the people making the games as 'sick, depraved individuals out to destroy our modern culture'.

It's the same tune we've been hearing for decades.

Ladies showing knees at the beach.
Alcohol.
Communism.
Comic Books.
Rock And Roll.
Elvis.
The British Invasion.
Movies.
Television.
Radio.
The computer.
Literacy.
Integration of races.
Suffrage.
Homosexuals (continuing)
And now, Video games.

There are still people who fervently believe that Dungeons and Dragons, Harry Potter, and Pokemon teach satanic magic to impressionable youths.

In America, there are valid complaints about the effects of Video games on youth. However, the studies suggest that violence in games only begets violence in life if the person had violent tendencies to start with. But this gets spun, concealed, lied and fabricated by those who seek to sensationalize the information for their own monetary or power-grabbing purposes.

It's a shame that the media loves the sensational over the factual.

Thanks for your support. And yeah, it won't let me put paragraphs into a forum post.

Just be aware that you will get heckled for it - I did a presentation about censorship in general, and got a lot of crap for it from classmates who were part of the whole 'GTA makes people kill, Marilyn Manson makes people worship Satan, and Clockwork Orange makes people rape, 'cuz Bill O'Reilly says so! Ban them all!' camp.

Just letting you know.

Just so long as the truth is out there though it will be available to make people think, the problem is, you won't get so many of the idiots around here because this forum is for people who know what is right an wrong and we are working do defend it, unfortunately the idiots don't want to know what the clever people have to say because it goes against how they have been indoctrinated, therefore what you have to say should be collated with other such important ideas and ideals, and then got it sent to the people who have too much influence on people's lives, the BBC news for example are very evenhanded when it comes to information like this, FOX on the other hand are a bunch of sensationalists who believe we are a small community of 100 odd children, if we could get the minds of capable adults and people with valid opinions and get them to these people we might start to make a small, but noticeable difference.

I would happily draft a few essays out on the inaccuracy of anti-game activists and get a bit of info to the people on how easy it is to safely deal with children's time management issues among other things such as video game violence (which in most cases can be restricted by in game content filters) and software filters which are available on most consoles anyway.

So I hereby announce: INTELLIGENT PEOPLE GET WRITING!

I think I will create a seperate forum for this work so we can collect a few people to get working on stuff, I'm in college right now so we will have to wait for the weekend for my essays
