October 17, 2006 - Terra Soft today announced that it will bring its Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 to Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 3. This news makes Sony's announcement of Linux support via the console 100% official and means that users will essentially be able to turn their gaming system into a fully-functioning computer, replete with whatever applications they feel like installing, be it for entertainment or business. According to Terra Soft's website, Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 will be available in mid-November for the PlayStation 3, and then a version for Apple PowerPC systems will follow shortly thereafter.

Following the company's standard release system, v5.0 will be made available in a three-phase product rollout. At launch, users of the company's YDL.net service (which comes at a cost) will be able to download the OS to their computer and burn a bootable disc for installation on the PlayStation 3. Two weeks later, the company will offer ready-made installation discs for purchase through the site. Two weeks after that, it will be made freely available on public mirrors. In short, if you're willing to wait one month after the system's release, you'll be able to download Linux for it for free.

Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 will come with both a single-click installation mode for casual users and an advanced installer for power users. In other words, Terra Soft aims to allow even Linux novices an extremely easy entry point to the OS, while also allowing veterans the ability to customize the system to their liking.

The OS, which is based upon Fedora Core 5, will ship with the following components:
# kernel 2.6.16
# gcc 3.4.4 and glibc 2.4
# Cell SDK 1.1
# OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
# FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0
# Nautilus 2.1.4
A number of "personal accessories; development tools; sound and video, Internet and networking applications" will also ship with the package, though the press release does not disclose any specifics.

Hmm... Fedora's pretty good, so it's a good sign if that's what Yellow Dog's derived from. I've got FC4 running on my laptop, and I've found it extremely cooperative for the most part.

Looking at their website, I see they also intend to support E17 -- I've played with that a bit, and although most of the builds that I downloaded were pretty buggy, it's still a freakin' gorgeous window manager. :)

Hardly. seriously, when IE can handle proper W3C standards, then we'll talk, until then, IE isn't even a serious option in my line of work (software development/web development). My customers want something... able to be trusted to display their pages correctly. IE doesn't cut it.

So the PS3 is basically a cheaper gaming PC. Maybe Sony isn't being as dumb as we think they at.

damn I was hoping for a read only browser that has a limited cache to prevent hacking.....this might not be a good ieda...but then again Sony has the cash to crate a department to keep the browser safe....like they would tho...

I don't really bother with other browsers. I used Firefox for a bit but I decided to just stick with my trusty IE.

Nah, I wouldn't worry too much about Linux hackers. All the Linux users I know would never mess with another Linux user, simply because the use it. I've also seen my Linux-using friend mess someone's machine up in retaliation to an attempted hack after he tracked them down via their ip address. A lot of people also put Linux on the previous console generation, so including it is a pretty smart idea for the mod community. I'm still not interested in it, though.

It really shouldn't. But hey, if you want Linux on absolutely everything, why not?

I suggest asking yourself this before buying the PS3. Do you want to play games on it? If not, don't buy it.

Oh games I shall play on it but I can get a 60CC mortor bike cheaper than that..... I don't think games are worth 600 anymore...at least with a PC you do alot ore on it 0-o

Exactly my point. I don't think the games are worth the pricetag. Even more interesting, I found out how many PS3s CompUSA is getting today...300 for the nation. There's roughly 295 stores, and the corporate office wants some, so many of the smaller stores, such as the one in the Atlanta, GA area, are not getting any. Because of the limited supply, they're supposedly trying to sell them with an additional controller, a game, etc, in an attempt to bring the price to $1000 USD. Good times, huh?

And they went and closed down link sang for doing questionable things...holy fck.......

Whats your take on the 360? I feel its a complete mis mash and hog pog, they just signed a deal with hollwood for streaming HD movies and such..on a 20GB HD I don't think sooooo....god MS has made so many mistakes, game wise its looking better but christ its pretty sucky as it is now...

The WII has the price and the quality even if its slightly less than it once was that alone beats the other 2 add the innovation in control its a win win.
