So, here's an article which was linked to from Kotaku. The following link is to original article on Rock Paper Shotgun.

So here’s the thing: Eve Online is a better model for making an MMO than World Of Warcraft. If someone, right now, was looking for a way to create an interesting MMO they should take Eve as their mechanical gameplay model, and not WoW.

Now that doesn’t necessarily mean that Eve Online is a better MMO than World Of Warcraft. Eve is messed up and broken in all kinds of outrageous ways, and the PvP-heavy spaceship-centric world design puts most people off the idea completely. What it does mean is that there’s the potential for a better MMO to be built using the principles that Eve has pioneered. So forget what you know, or think you know, about Eve Online and imagine instead what World Of Warcraft would be like if it were designed with the same principles as Eve Online.

To me, this is similar to the old DnD versus GURPS argument. I just wanted to get your thoughts on the article.

He's got some good points, as the level-grind is the most annoying part of WoW. Well, that and how feckin expensive the mounts are. Why should a mount cost 2-4 times what a full set of green Plate armor costs, considering that armor actually has combat value and the mount just looks cool and moves you around a bit faster. And tying into that, the fact you have to pay 9 times the value of the mount just to be able to ride it.

the perfect MMO build is one that offers lite grinding and a fulfilling game expirance, basically meaning make it a fun SP game thats highly customizable and keep adding stuff to it, make the MP stuff balanced to fun so as normal enimes in a normal zone are not 5X stronger than you.

I would be happy to pay a extra 2-5$ a month to make it fun lower the anal restrictions and furstation from the grind factor.

Lets take FF11 and lower the level reqs by 2-4 levels, trade any item at any time(but main quest ones), carry 2-4X as much stuff, deleveling only effects stats no skills, spells and equipment lets make it I dunno...fun...... this is the main problem with MMOs they focus on a gimmick to grind money from people when the only gimmick should be a fun game.

I think that's one of the big reasons that WoW is so popular: there's only a very small monetary punishment for death (beyond time lost to getting you body back). If you were to lose experience just for wandering into the wrong area, it would cause frustration and make many players decide to quit.

I'm tired so maybe im reading it wrong, but did he just criticize eve for being spaceship centric? Thats the only reason I really even play eve, mechanically its not really different besides most MMO's, it just has space ships and large fleet fights and very brutal (Yes, frustrating as hell) PvP. If it didn't have those I wouldn't play it.
