Ok, I know this is "quasi" politics related, but it's still humorous:
U.S. flags face wrong way along Bush motorcade route in Bulgaria (http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070611/K061102AU.html)
The Bulgarian capital was aflutter with American flags in honour of the U.S president's visit. There was just one glitch to the patriotic welcome: Every second flag was facing the wrong way.
[E]very other flagpole along Bush's motorcade route, which followed Sofia's central Tsarigradsko Chausee boulevard, had the stars and stripes mounted in the wrong direction....
By midday Monday, most of the flags seemed to be properly displayed.

http://www.wfsb.com/news/13473195/detail.html?cnn=yes
MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. -- The skeletal remains of an elderly woman were found Friday in her home, more than seven years after neighbors last reported seeing her.
Ann M. Simmeck apparently died of natural causes, according to an autopsy conducted later Friday. She would have been 79 years old.
The autopsy could not determine the year and date of her death, believed to have occurred several years ago inside her split-level ranch home.
The home, which bears a strongly worded "no trespassing" sign, still had working electric service. Calendars and food inside the freezer were dated 1999 and earlier, neighbors who talked with investigators told The Hartford Courant.
Officers visited the property Friday and found Simmeck's skeletal remains after a family member became concerned about Simmeck's absence and called police.
"The last time I physically saw her was 1998, 1999," said Mary Carlson, Simmeck's neighbor since 1997.
Simmeck's family members could not be reached Saturday morning.
Neighbors said Friday that Simmeck's estranged husband used to mow the lawn and care for the yard, but told them a few years ago that he didn't have keys to the house and never went inside.
State police detectives are investigating, and the state medical examiner's office will continue to try to pinpoint the year and approximate date of her death.
I don't know why, but it made me chuckle.

I don't know why, but it made me chuckle.
When asked if it didn't strike anyone odd that she didn't come out of her house in 7 years, her neighbors said "Honestly I though she had became a hermit, or started a Meth lab. Honestly I didn't want some crazy Hermit attacking me with with their Hermit stick or some Meth dealer pulling out their nine and busting a cap in my ass, so I stayed away from her house. And the kids on the block said it was haunted...."

Depending on how big the yard is, sometimes you don't notice... It did say it was a ranch home, maybe it was on a large lot, surrounded by trees and such.

Probe Shows Jupiter Moon Erupting Into Space (http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/gallery/missionPhotos/pages/051407.html)The New Horizons probe caught the moon Io in the act of 'barfing' into space. A five-frame sequence from the New Horizons probe captured a beautiful plume of ash from Io's Tvashtar volcano. "Snapped by the probe's Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) as the spacecraft flew past Jupiter earlier this year, this first-ever "movie" of an Io plume clearly shows motion in the cloud of volcanic debris, which extends 330 kilometers (200 miles) above the moon's surface ... The appearance and motion of the plume is remarkably similar to an ornamental fountain on Earth, replicated on a gigantic scale."Kewl. :)

"Puddles" of Water Sighted on Mars (http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn12026-mars-rover-finds-puddles-on-the-planets-surface.html)Further reinforcing the theory of a wet Mars, NewScientist is reporting on what appear to be water puddles in newly taken images from the Mars rover. While these results are controversial, the assumption that these blue 'puddles' are water still has to be tested by engineers. They'll try to measure the uniform smoothness of the puddle surfaces. Analysis will also examine their apparent 'opaqueness', where in some areas observers claim to see pebbles underneath the surface of the blue areas. From the article: 'No signs of liquid water have been observed directly from cameras on the surface before. Reports last year pointed to the existence of gullies on crater walls where water appears to have flowed in the last few years, as shown in images taken from orbit, but those are short-lived flows, which are thought to have frozen over almost immediately.'

Note the references to the Panel "investigating".
Yet, average citizens are giving "testimony".
But the VA Tech Parents aren't allowed to be a part of the Panel?
"As the meeting began, its chairman, W. Gerald Massengill said: "I know the governor received several hundred requests from Virginians all across Virginia, and outside Virginia, wanting to serve on this panel -- including some family members. And I would say to all of you, particularly the family members, you are extremely important to us." "

So oral sex isn't "sexual intercourse"? Since when? Or is this the kind of law written by people who believe it's only sex if it's the "missionary" position? If Wilson had had sexual intercourse with the 15-year-old he would have fallen under Georgia's "Romeo and Juliet" exception. But under the law in 2003, oral sex between teens constituted aggravated child molestation and carried a mandatory sentence.
Georgia lawmakers changed the law in 2006 to make consensual oral sex between teens a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year behind bars. Offenders do not have to register as sex offenders, as Wilson will be required to do.
But the state's top court ruled the 2006 change couldn't be applied retroactively to Wilson's case. An attempt earlier this year to pass a bill that would provide a remedy for Wilson has stalled.

Aid workers killed in Lebanon (http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/73369C30-A2ED-4CA7-8C45-9754C8DD2ECA.htm)Two Red Cross workers have been shot dead at the entrance to the besieged Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, agency officials say.
The pair's vehicle was hit by either gunfire or a shell fired from within the camp as they left the northern entrance, according to hospital officials and a Red Cross spokesman.
Reports say the workers were escorting a Palestinian Muslim scholar attempting to mediate in the fighting out of the camp.
The deaths comes as Lebanese troops continued to shell the camp and exchange fire with fighters from the Fatah al-Islam group who have been holed up inside for four weeks.
They are the first aid workers to be killed in the conflict.
Medics told AFP news agency the scholar was Sheikh Mohammed al-Hajj from the Palestinian Scholars' League and said he had been lightly wounded in the leg in the incident.Tells you that the yahoos inside the camp really have no want to end this peacefully. I seriously hope they get all the civies out, and then flatten the place. There are just some lines you don't cross...

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A judge on Monday threw out the 10-year sentence against a 21-year-old for a consensual sex encounter he had as a teenager. But the state attorney general quickly filed a notice of appeal, keeping Genarlow Wilson in prison for the time being.
The prosecutor's move brought an abrupt halt to the jubilation Wilson's mother, Juannessa Bennett, and his attorney, B.J. Bernstein, were feeling, and the plans they were making for Bennett to be reunited with her son.
"It is extremely, extremely disturbing that the attorney general would take this action now," Bernstein said, adding that she did not know what message "he's trying to send" or "who he's representing."
In a written statement, Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker said he filed the appeal to resolve "clearly erroneous legal issues," saying that while the judge did have the authority to grant habeas relief, he did not have the authority "to reduce or modify the judgment of the trial court."
Separately, Baker noted that Douglas County recently had offered a plea deal "that would have allowed Genarlow Wilson to plead to First Offender Treatment, which would mean that he would not have a criminal record nor would he be subject to registering on the sex offender registry once his sentence had been completed."
"The plea deal, if accepted by Genarlow Wilson's lawyers, could also result in Genarlow Wilson receiving a sentence substantially shorter than the 10-year mandatory minimum sentence for which he was originally sentenced, possibly leading to his release based upon time already served," Baker wrote.
"Genarlow Wilson, through his attorneys, rejected all of those offers. The district attorney's office has indicated that the plea offer will remain available to Genarlow Wilson notwithstanding the appeals process," according to Baker's statement.
Wilson has drawn support from throughout the country, including the editorial board of the New York Times and former President Jimmy Carter.
When he was 17 years old, he had a consensual sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl, which was consensually videotaped.
Georgia law at the time made such an action a felony punishable by 10 years in prison and listing on the sex offender registry.
The state legislature later changed the law, partly in response to Wilson's case. But the change was not made retroactive, leaving Wilson in jail. He has already served more than two years.
Superior Court Judge Thomas H. Wilson of Monroe County, Georgia, voided the sentence Monday, agreeing with Bernstein that the punishment was cruel and unusual, and therefore unconstitutional, Bernstein said.
The judge ruled Wilson should serve one year, less than he has already served, and that he would not be listed as a sex offender.
Upon reading his ruling, which was faxed to her office in Atlanta, Bernstein cheered, screamed with delight, and hugged Wilson's mother. Watch Wilson's mom, lawyer's tearful reaction to the judge's ruling
"I just feel like a miracle happened," Bennett told CNN.
"He didn't deserve to have the sexual predator status," she said.
When Bernstein -- a frequent guest on CNN -- spoke to reporters before the attorney general's announcement, she pleaded with prosecutors to give up the fight.
"This has been a really long 28 months," Bernstein said tearfully. "It's a very long fight. And right now we have an order of release. And I beg the attorney general of the state of Georgia: please, enough. Do not file an appeal, please. Because we have an order of release right now for a young man that I think most everybody in the community believes should not be in prison."
She added, "Please, please, enough."
Bennett called the decision "a dream come true. It's definitely a dream come true." Of the judge she said, "He got a lot of heart, and God bless him."
Bernstein said she could not believe how long it took to get to this point.
Looks like the Attorney General is going to throw his weight around in this one. Honestly this is one time I am siding with the defendant, he was a kid at the time, as well as the girl. It was concentual, there was no rape involved the guy should walk for this.

Court overrules Bush 'enemy combatant' policy (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19172214/) The Bush administration cannot legally detain a legal U.S. resident it believes is an al-Qaida sleeper agent without charging him, a divided federal appeals court ruled Monday.
The case involves a Qatari national and suspected al-Qaida operative who is the only person being held in the United States as an "enemy combatant."
In the 2-1 decision, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel found that the federal Military Commissions Act does not strip Ali al-Marri of his constitutional rights to challenge his accusers in court. It ruled the government must allow him to be released from military detention.Duh. They could charge him with treason, but can't simply label him as an "enemy" to strip him of his rights...The government can transfer al-Marri to civilian authorities to face criminal charges, initiate deportation proceedings, hold him as a witness in a grand jury proceeding or detain him for a limited period of time under the Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism law.But they did give the government an "out" to correct this... a legal one anyway.

So oral sex isn't "sexual intercourse"? Since when? Or is this the kind of law written by people who believe it's only sex if it's the "missionary" position?
Usually "intercourse" refers specifically to coitus. Oral sex is really just foreplay, so I can see how they'd make that distinction. Of course, that being said, there still shouldn't be separate laws. Sexual contact is sexual contact, and the law should deal only with the presence or absence of consent rather than whose naughty bits went where.
Looks like the Attorney General is going to throw his weight around in this one. Honestly this is one time I am siding with the defendant, he was a kid at the time, as well as the girl. It was concentual, there was no rape involved the guy should walk for this.

Polymer, heal thyself (http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/News/2007/June/11060701.asp)Scientists have developed a form of plastic skin that can heal itself when damaged. The material relies on an underlying network of vessels — similar to blood capillaries — that carry a healing agent to areas on the material's surface that sustain damage. Unlike previous self-healing systems that relied on capsules of agent buried in the polymer and which became depleted after one use, the new system can respond to damage at the same point many times over.Neat. Considering that the Legislatures have specifically said the change in the law was to undo this case the Attorney General is putting himself out on a limb. The Georgia State legislature has specifically said that the AG & prosecutors were twisting the original law to lock away teens engaging in consensual sex acts. They corrected the law with the Romeo & Juliet clause they added in. The AG didn't like it so now he is twisting the Romeo & Juliet act.
It'll be up to the Georgia Legislature or Governor to correct this. Considering that the Governor signed the Romeo & Juliet bill into law it looks like he would pull rank on the AG and issue a full pardon. This would get the guy out of jail no matter what the AG tried.

A Case Against Emergency Breaks (http://www.canadaeast.com/ce2/docroot/article.php?articleID=9698), particularly in the upside down areas.
A dozen riders on a roller coaster spent half an hour hanging upside down -- 46 metres above the ground -- after a power outage shut down the attraction.
It took about 30 minutes for the city Fire Department to rescue the riders using a ladder truck Saturday evening, said Aundrea Crary, spokeswoman for the Springs & Crystal Falls amusement park.
Spectators cheered when the riders were brought to the ground from the highest point of a loop on the X-Coaster, but one passenger threw up after reaching safety.
The X-Coaster was one of several rides brought to a halt by the outage that originated somewhere near the park.
"You could tell who got off the (X-Coaster) because their faces were red," said Angela Salter. She was riding the Gauntlet, another coaster, and said park employees worked quickly to free her.
All I could say to the last woman was DUH!!!!! Also don't most coasters only break once they are upside right?

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald wants Libby jailed immediately. (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/06/12/cia.leak.trial.ap/index.html)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald urged a federal judge Tuesday not to delay former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's 2 1/2-year prison sentence in the CIA leak case.
Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, has argued that he has a good chance of winning an appeal and should be allowed to remain free until that challenge has run its course.
U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton, who sentenced Libby to prison for lying to authorities and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson's identity, has said he sees no reason to grant Libby's request.
A delay in Libby's sentence would give President Bush more time to consider pardon requests from Libby's supporters, who say the loyal aide was caught up in a political investigation and does not deserve prison time.
Fitzgerald, in court documents filed Tuesday, said an appeals court is unlikely to overturn Libby's conviction because the evidence against him was so overwhelming.
You know I am surprised Alberto Gonzales hasn't fired Fitzgerald due to poor performance yet. :D

Colin Powell Advises Barack Obama on Foreign Policy (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,280115,00.html)
WASHINGTON —
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has sought out former Secretary of State Colin Powell for advice on foreign policy matters.
While Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents, he said Sunday it was too early in the 2008 race to say whether he would back the GOP nominee.
"I'm going to support the best person that I can find who will lead this country for the eight years beginning in January of 2009," Powell said.
Powell was secretary of state under President Bush and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman for the first President Bush.
Powell said he has met twice with Obama, the Illinois senator. "I've been around this town a long time and I know everybody who is running for office. And I make myself available to talk about foreign policy matters and military matters with whoever wishes to chat with me," Powell said.
Powell said he does not want to serve in elected office but was less certain about a return to some government post.
"I would not rule it out. I am not at all interested in political life if you mean elected political life. That is unchanged. But I always keep my eyes open and my ears open to requests for service,"
Looks like Obama is pulling out some big guns. Really though I wish someone could convince Colin Powell to run for elected Office. Thinking about it, if W. hadn't tagged Colin Powell early on as his Sec of State his chances of winning would have went down significantly. If one of the current Candidates could just get Colin Powell to run for VP (s)he would have the White House hands down.

Technically though I don't think the AG can get rid of a Special Prosecutor, once they are appointed they have sole authority into the investigation they are appointed for, and cannot even be stopped by the President. The issue is most of them end up ending their careers in government service much like Kenneth Star did after Lewinsky.

He knew his vote would sign their death warrant (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19189482/from/RS.2/)
A tale that illustrates the difficulties of the rules of engagement and honour...Not a day goes by that newly retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell does not think about the two goat herders he and three comrades encountered on a late June day in 2005 while searching Afghanistan's border with Pakistan for an elusive Taliban leader....
The team members had to make a quick decision: Kill the herders, or let them go and risk giving away their position to the Taliban.
The men of Seal Team 10 made the decision that comported to the rules of engagement, but it ended up costing the lives of Luttrell's best friend, two others and 16 more servicemen who tried to rescue them. They let the herders go....
The Taliban started picking off members of the unit quickly. Luttrell's best friend, Lt. Mike Murphy, basically sealed his fate when he ran out in the open to use a cell phone to summon a rescue team. He and two other unit members died that day, as did all 16 aboard a U.S. helicopter destroyed while trying to get to the men....
Luttrell crawled some seven miles to a village and begged villagers to help him. They agreed, and hid him from the Taliban by moving him from house to house, at the same time nursing his wounds.
"They weren't going to give me up," Luttrell said, explaining that there is an ancient custom in the region that villagers must aid people requesting sanctuary.
Eventually, Luttrell made out of the village and back to the U.S. He paused when Lauer asked him if he still regrets his vote to let the herders live.
"Every day. Every day," said Luttrell, who was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism last year. "It would be worth me doing the time in prison if my buddies were still alive, if that answers your question."At least he's willing to go to jail for it, had it gone the other way. It's ok to make the "wrong" (legally speaking) choice, as long as you are willing to accept the consequences. Most US politicians would just try to weasel their way out of even acknowledging the rules of engagement in the first place.

Well, you see, I'm not entirely satisfied with your performance lately...I'm afraid your work's been slipping and...and well, I'm afraid we've been thinking about letting you go. Oh, I know, I know. You've been with the company a long time now. Almost...let me see. Almost ten thousand years! My word, doesn't time fly? It seems like only yesterday...I remember the day you commenced your employment, swinging down from the trees, fresh-faced and nervous, a bone clasped in your bristling fist..."Where do I start, sir?" You asked, plaintively. I recalled my exact words: "There's a pile of dinosaur eggs over there, youngster," I said, smiling paternally all the while. "Get sucking." Well, we've certainly come a long way since then, haven't we? And yes, yes you're right, in all that time you haven't missed a day. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Also, please don't think I've forgotten about your outstanding service record, or about all of the invaluable contributions that you've made to the company...Fire, the wheel, agriculture..It's an impressive list, old-timer. A jolly impressive list. Don't get me wrong. But...well, to be frank, we've had our problems too. There's no getting away from it. Do you know what I think alot of it stems from? I'll tell you...It's your basic unwillingness to get on in the company. You don't seem to want to face up to any real responibility. To be your own boss. Lord knows you've been given plenty of opportunities... We've offered you promotion time and time again, and each time you've turned us down. "I couldn't handle the work, Guv'Nor," You wheedled. "I know my place." To be frank, you're not trying are you? You see, you've been standing still for far too long, and its starting to show in your work...And, I might add, in your general standard of behavior. The constant bickering on the factory floor has not escaped my attention...nor the recent bouts of rowdiness in the staff canteen. Then of course there's...Hmm. Well, I didn't really want to have to bring this up, but...Well, you see, I've been hearing some disturbing rumors about your personal life. No, never you mind who told me. No names, no pack drill... I understand you are unable to get on with your spouse. I hear that you argue. I am told that you shout. Violence has been mentioned. I am reliably informed that you always hurt the one your love...the one you shouldn't hurt at all. And what about the children, its always the children who suffer, as you're well aware. Poor little mites. What are they to make of it? What are they to make of all your bullying, your despair, your cowardice and all your fondly nurtured bigotries? Really, its not good enough, is it? And its no good blaming the drop in work standards on and management either...though to be sure, the management is very bad. In fact, let us not mince words...The Management is terrible! We've had a string of embezzelers, frauds, liars, and lunatics making a string of catastrophic decisions. This is plain fact. But who elected them? It was you! You who elected these people! You who gave them the power to make your decisions for you! While I'll admit that anyone can make a mistake once, to go on making the same lethal errors century after century seems to me nothing short of deliberate. You have encouraged these malicious incompetents, who have made your working life a shambles. You have accepted without question their senseless orders. You have allowed them to fill your workspace with dangerous and unproven machines. You could have stopped them. All you had to say was "No." You have no spine. You have no pride. You are no longer an asset to the company. I will, however, be generous. You will be granted two years to show me some improvement in your work. If at the end of that time you are still unwilling to make a go of it...You're fired. That will be all. You may return to your labors.(what we aught to say to the mouthbreathers)

Oh, but it gets better...
"The boy’s mother and her male companion were charged with cruelty to children and with concealing a weapon. Police found a handgun in the car."
And their reason?
"Police say the couple told them the boy had misbehaved, although witnesses disagree. Either way, police say, it doesn’t matter."
We threaten my son with this all the time. We've never done it though.

Anti-Syrian politician killed in Beirut blast (http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/06/13/lebanon-blast.html)An explosion rocked Beirut's seafront Wednesday afternoon, killing a leading anti-Syrian politician along with at least seven others, security officials said.
The explosion targeted lawmaker Walid Eido and injured at least 10 bystanders, according to Future TV, which is close to Lebanon's anti-Syrian bloc.
Eido was killed, along with one of his sons and two other people accompanying them, various media outlets reported security officials as saying....
The Lebanese Broadcasting Corp. television station said the explosion came from a bomb-rigged car, a method that has been used to assassinate opponents of Syria over the past two years....
Eido was a high-profile ally of Saad Hariri, the leader of the parliamentary majority and son of former prime minister Rafik Hariri, who was assassinated in February 2005 in a Beirut car bombing. Bloody hell, here we go again...

Weapon fragment found in whale reveals it was more than a century old (http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070612/K061233AU.html)A 45-tonne bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt - more than a century ago.
Embedded deep under its blubber was a 13-centimetre arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.
Calculating a whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It is rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old.
The bomb lance fragment, lodged in a bone between the whale's neck and shoulder blade, was likely manufactured in New Bedford, on the southeast coast of Massachusetts, a major whaling centre at that time, Bockstoce said.
It was probably shot at the whale from a heavy shoulder gun around 1890. The small metal cylinder was filled with explosives fitted with a time-delay fuse so it would explode seconds after it was shot into the whale. The bomb lance was meant to kill the whale immediately and prevent it from escaping.
The device exploded and probably injured the whale, Bockstoce said. "It probably hurt the whale, or annoyed him, but it hit him in a non-lethal place," he said. "He couldn't have been that bothered if he lived for another 100 years."

Louisiana town banning saggy pants; plans fines jail terms for violators (http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070613/K061304AU.html)It soon will be a crime in this Cajun-country town to let the waistband of your pants sag too low in public.
Mayor Carol Broussard has said he will sign an ordinance the town council approved this week setting penalties of up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for being caught in pants that show undergarments or certain parts of the body....
Broussard's advice for people who like their pants to hang low: "Just wear it properly. Cover your vital parts. I mean, if you expose your private parts, you'll get a fine. If you walk up and your pants drop, you get a fine. They're better off taking the pants off and just wearing a dress."As Dennis Leary would say: "Pull up your pants!"

The charges:
"...five felony charges — three counts of sexual battery and two counts of disseminating obscene materials to a juvenile. The charges carried a potential 17 years in prison."
So, what does the judge do?
"...sentenced on Tuesday to three days in jail and five years of probation."
Excuse me??? Why????
"Judge Dick Ambrose said he ordered probation because Scarlett had no previous criminal record and has obligations as a mother. She has a 3-year-old son from the relationship and two other children with her husband."
How the heck many people have been charged with a sex crime and been given little to no jail time cause they got kids to take care of?
But this line kinda makes me laugh:
"Ambrose is also requiring Scarlett to register as a sexually oriented offender and disclose her place of residence to law enforcement."
"...sexually oriented offender..."

Sask. will sue over equalization: Calvert (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/saskatchewan/story/2007/06/13/lawsuit-saskatchewan.html)During the election campaign, the Conservatives promised to take non-renewable resources like oil and gas out of the equalization formula — a change Calvert said would mean an extra $800 million a year for provincial coffers.
The March 19 budget did remove oil and gas out from the formula, but added a cap on equalization payments. As a result, Saskatchewan is getting $226 million this year and nothing next year.
Calvert said the legal action would not be over a broken campaign promise. Instead, it would be based on the sections of the constitution that require the equalization program be fair and equitable, he said.Bit of background, equalization is the Cdn fed gov's way of "inflating" budgets of "have-not" provinces with tax revenue from "have" provinces, so provinces with low tax bases can still provide social services like health care and education. In the 1970's and ever since, most "have not" provinces with non-renewable resource revenues have signed deals allowing those revenues to be kept out of the equalization formula (because direct oil revenue can run dry, so to speak).
But there's a lot of stink, because the Conservatives have been non-stop driving the idea of "promise made-promise kept", the concept that they are not lying scum like the previous Liberal government were (they mention it at every opportunity about the promises made during the election that they've kept). This however, is a thorn in their side, because it's "promise made, exceptions not mentioned". The Conservatives are basically stating that because the maritimes have the Atlantic Accords, this doesn't affect them (although they're signing a new side-deal with Nova Scotia), and nobody cares about Saskatchewan anyway... (Ironic considering the Conservatives were elected on the promise that the prairies would get better representation in Ottawa)
So a plan that was supposed to "fix" the equalization formula so you didn't have non-renewable resources included, and was equally applied with no "side-deals" to complicate things, has resulted in the same number of "side-deals" and the inclusion of oil revenues (partially), unless you who want to use the "old & broken" system. So essentially not fixing anything, but just pissing everyone off who lives in a "have-not" province who was promised a fix.

Well, a one-piece jumpsuit would work just as well, but those haven't been in style for a long time ;) The idea, I think, is that a dress would cover underwear unless it was excessively short -- there isn't typically a gap between the upper and lower parts where the top of a thong (or other underwear) would be visible. Also, a dress is far less likely to spontaneously fall down :p

TSA has sunk to a new low:
http://www.nowpublic.com/nightmare_at_reagan_national_airport_a_security_st ory_to_end_all_security_stories
If you travel enough, you've seen it all -- and possibly some of the awful things that can happen while traveling will have actually happened to you. But nothing I've read about or experienced comes close to what Monica Emmerson experienced while at Reagan National Airport on June 11th while traveling with her 19-month-old toddler. This isn't one of those Catch-22 bureaucratic snafus; this isn't about rules being applied to the letter. This story is mostly about what can happen simply because the authorities in charge decide that they're going to exercise their authority because they can, regardless of whether it's legal or right or makes any sense at all.
And if this can happen to a former law enforcement officer with the United States Secret Service, it can happen to anyone.
The incident started when Monica, who left the Secret Service to raise a family, was stopped while going through airport security because there was water in her son's sippy cup. The sippy cup was seized by TSA. Monica wanted the cup back because the sippy cup was the only way her son would drink -- and it was a long flight between Washington, DC and Reno, Nevada where she was going for a family reunion. If you've ever had a toddler you understand about sippy cups.
So she was willing to spill the water out. Drink the water. Anything -- all that she wanted was to be able to have a cup that her 19-month-old toddler could drink from.
Here's what happened in Monica's words:
"I demanded to speak to a TSA [Transportation Security Administration] supervisor who asked me if the water in the sippy cup was 'nursery water or other bottled water.' I explained that the sippy cup water was filtered tap water. The sippy cup was seized as my son was pointing and crying for his cup. I asked if I could drink the water to get the cup back, and was advised that I would have to leave security and come back through with an empty cup in order to retain the cup. As I was escorted out of security by TSA and a police officer, I unscrewed the cup to drink the water, which accidentally spilled because I was so upset with the situation.
"At this point, I was detained against my will by the police officer and threatened to be arrested for endangering other passengers with the spilled 3 to 4 ounces of water. I was ordered to clean the water, so I got on my hands and knees while my son sat in his stroller with no shoes on since they were also screened and I had no time to put them back on his feet. I asked to call back my fiancé, who I could still see from afar, waiting for us to clear security, to watch my son while I was being detained, and the officer threatened to arrest me if I moved. So I yelled past security to get the attention of my fiancé.
"I was ordered to apologize for the spilled water, and again threatened with arrest. I was threatened several times with arrest while detained, and while three other police officers were called to the scene of the mother with the 19 month old. A total of four police officers and three TSA officers reported to the scene where I was being held against my will. I was also told that I should not disrespect the officer and could be arrested for this too. I apologized to the officer and she continued to detain me despite me telling her that I would miss my flight. The officer advised me that I should have thought about this before I 'intentionally spilled the water!'"
Monica said that the incident ended this way: "I missed my flight, needless to say after being detained for over 40 minutes. After the officer was done humiliating me, I was advised that I could go through the security check point in an attempt to catch my flight. The officer insisted that my son and I be rescreened despite us both being detained and under her control the entire time."
During the weeks and months after 9/11 some passengers who were caught with unidentified fluids while going through airport security were told to drink the liquid (including breast milk) to prove that it wasn't an explosive. In one incident, a fourteen year old boy was ordered to drink water that he was carrying, and it turned out that this was unclean pond water he was carrying for a science project. Monica was more than happy to drink her child's tap water --all three or four ounces of it-- and tried, in fact. But it was the trying and spilling that seems to have escalated this into a situation that required the presence of four TSA officers and three police officers.
TSA found no other security problems with Monica Emmerson. Not even a nail clipper. Just the water and the sippy cup.
TSA's rules allow passengers to take up to three ounces of liquid on board; they also allow parents to take milk or baby formula on board in larger quantities than that, if declared to TSA. But the question that she was asked by TSA --was this "nursery water" in the sippy cup?-- was an unanswerable one, since there's no such thing as nursery water in the TSA regulations, and it's not a generic term.
Monica Emmerson was detained for 45 minutes. She wasn't questioned about possible ties to terrorists. Her carry-on items weren't rigorously searched -- or even searched again. Neither the police nor TSA took any action that indicated that they throught she might be a security risk. She was just detained, harassed and threatened with arrest. All because of a sippy cup with water in it.
I swear, they need to scale back security to pre-9/11 and just let military/police personnel bypass security with their knives and sidearms. I guarantee that hijackings would fail if that happened.

Quebec introduces gun bill dubbed Anastasia's law (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2007/06/15/qc-anastasiaslaw0615.html)Bill 9 — called Anastasia's law in memory of 18-year-old Anastasia DeSousa, who was killed at Dawson College last September — will prohibit the possession of all firearms on the grounds of teaching institutions.
The bill, tabled in Quebec's national assembly, will also:
* Restrict ownership of semi-automatic weapons to gun club members.
* Limit the right of the owner to transport guns for one place to another.
* Require gun clubs to report any suspicious or unusual behaviour detected among members. The "no guns on campus" rule is likely just symbolic (as I suppose the rest is too), but I imagine the restrictions on owning/transporting semi-auto weapons will likely pass muster. Handguns already have the same restrictions up here.
The clincher though, was that the killer WAS a gun-club member in good standing, which is why he was allowed to possess his handguns. Everything for him was legally purchased and licensed.

Huge Swiss tunnel opens in Alps (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6755953.stm)Switzerland has opened the world's longest rail tunnel on land - the 34-kilometre (21-mile) Loetschberg tunnel under the Alps.
It will cut the journey time between Germany and Italy by at least a third.
It is set to be fully operational in December, and will eventually handle about 42 passenger trains and up to 80 freight trains daily.
The estimated cost of the project is 4.3bn Swiss francs (£1.75bn; $3.5bn). Construction started eight years ago.
Worldwide the Loetschberg is third in length, behind Japan's Seikan tunnel and the Channel tunnel, both of which are underwater. But it is the longest tunnel on land. Even if that's 122 trains both ways, that's 1 train every 20 minutes!
Another tunnel, 60km long, is due for completion in 2015, and will be the longest tunnel in the world.

Yeah, there's no inequality in the justice system. The US legal system is the best in the world.
"The sentence ordered by Judge Ronald C. Castleberry was the maximum under state guidelines."
If that's true, then the law is freakin' retarded.
Why?
"Authorities said Corpuz, who cropped her hair and stands 5-foot-3, passed herself off as 17-year-old Mark Villanueva after meeting the girl at a mall in September 2005. Her parents, immigrants who speak little English, let Corpuz live at their home.
Over time Corpuz began physically and sexually abusing the girl, authorities said. Although Corpuz had sexual contact with the girl, Corpuz never let the girl see her genitals, police said."
"Two counts of third-degree child rape were dropped last month before Corpuz pleaded guilty to the lesser charge..."
That's such a horribly made deal.
"...sparing the girl the ordeal of a trial."
"The girl did not speak in court Thursday but wrote a letter to the judge to express her anger at Corpuz and the way she and her family had been treated."
Ya know, I think written testimony should be allowed.
I understand the need for cross examination and the Right of the accused to face their accuser. Still, there has to be a way that this kid could be allowed to testify through written communication because she can write a letter of anger, but apparently it doesn't count as testimony.

"EVERETT, Wash. - A woman who posed as a homeless orphaned boy and befriended and abused a teenage girl was sentenced to a year in jail for child molestation."
Either that or through AIM.
