From this MSNBC story (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18992609/):
In World of Warcraft, the most popular online game, with an estimated 8 million participants worldwide, some regions of this fantasy domain have grown so lawless that players said they fear to brave them alone. Gangs of animated characters have repeatedly preyed upon lone travelers, killing them and making off with their virtual belongings.
Now it's common on PvP servers that members of the opposite faction will get ganked, but everyone knows that. This makes it sound like there's a crime area in WoW. Also, you can kill another character in a PvP world, but you cannot take another character's items. Just can't happen... writer may be mixing up the looting of NPC bodies...

That's just... silly. Most ganking is one-on-one anyway -- it's more fun that way -- and yeah, it's impossible to take people's stuff. There are other games where that is possible, but players go in knowing the risks. Usually it's relatively easy to re-equip, at least at low levels, and at high levels, most players know how to avoid getting killed.

Ultima Online Pre-Publish 16, you could freely kill other players in Fel, you could loot *every* item they had, cut their corpses into a torso, 2 arms 2 legs and a head (head had the players name on it), and you could cook and eat the parts if I remember right, human jerky. I think at some point you could also remove brains/skulls from heads, but I may be wrong.
THAT is some hardcore PvP, me and my "gang" would ride our horses and pwn dem noob miners. :O

You mean people still watch MSNBC? I always viewed it as a left-radical fear mongering chanel. The times that I do flip over to there, something ridiculus comes up.
It must be that Deal or No Deal.

Maybe they pulled it?
I gotta admit, the whole "roving bands of thieves and bandits mugging fat merchants in the highlands" image actually sounds like a lot of fun. Now if only someone had made that game...

Hahaha! Another classic case of "I didn't do my research and now I look dumb."
...Although, an MMO where that was actually possible could turn out pretty cool.

Yeah but it also seems like 99% of my gankers are Blood Elves.
Though it was fun punishing a BE rogue five levels below me for sapping me, ganking a chest, and just in general bugging me while killing Wyverns. I don't think she expected me to damage her to the point of dying after falling down a short cliff with two mobs aggro'd and survive.
