Well its DX9.L but still whats stop people form making .com/.exe hacks to get vister only games to run on XP like the old DOOM 3 hacks for 98/ME..mmmmm

================================================== ======
After announcing that DirectX 10 will only be available for Vista, Microsoft may be releaseing DirectX 9L for WinXP.

So much for DIrectX 10 only being for Vista.

The Inq reports that Microsoft, under pressure from EA (and presumably other game publishers), will make a new DirectX available for XP after all - to be called DirectX 9L

Mind you, since it supposedly runs DirectX 10 games, it may be DirectX 10 in all but name.

This is what happens when you paint yourself into a corner by announcing no DirectX 10 for XP... which announcement was really just a way of forcing people to Vista, in order to get DX10, to play DX10 games.

I'll be interested to see if DX 9L shows up, and how compatible it will be with DX10...

WE ALREADY reported here that Microsoft plans to introduce a new DirectX 9.0 version. This time we managed to get the name and the company plans to call it DirectX 9.0L.

You will remember that Nvidia was pressing Microsoft to call its last revision of DirectX, DirectX 9.1 but Vole decided to simply add a letter C to its existing DirectX 9.0 name. This currently available DirectX 9.0c features support for Shader model 3.0 and Nvidia though that upgrade from Shader model 2.0 would deserve at least 9.1 prefix.

Now the Vole plans to do the same thing. It will call its next generation DirectX featuring Shader model 4.0, DirectX 9.0L.

We don't know when the company plans to make this new marchitecture available but we expect that this will happen sometimes trough 2006. It's still too early to shift to Shader Model 4.0 as Nvidia and ATI won't have Shader model 4.0 hardware until middle of 2006.

It's interesting that ATI has to upgrade to Shader model 3.0 in a few weeks time and Shader Model 4.0 within a year from R520 aka Radeon X1800 RV530 aka Radeon X1600 and RV515 aka Radeon X1300. µ

the tweakgauides link suggestions its DX 9 for vista however what do you think people will hack it for use on XP?

In any case why do you need a new OS to run DX that would run perfectly on XP? this hardware/OS jump is madness.

The fact that Microsoft attempted to make DX10 a Vista exclusive feature pretty much buried the option of a Vista upgrade for gamers, even though youve already stated it, Microsoft would be surprised to find out that most gamers figured that one out already. Gotta love most of the developers making their DX10 games also DX9 compatible (i may be wrong, but if im right, <3)

Considering the massive driver conflicts already apparent in Vista, they havent really thought about the downside of DX10 being Vista exclusive.

Who wants to upgrade to a new OS to play the new games, when everything else doesnt work?

I just hope someone sees the need to build a DX hack to get DX10 games fully working on XP, even MS is somewhat lost at what they are doing.

Making it Vista-exclusive pretty much destines DirectX to be reverse-engineered. We must rejoice.

Sorry I'm late to the party, but here's some light reading (http://letskilldave.com/archive/2006/10/17/DirectX-10-for-Windows-XP_3F00_--Repeat-after-me_3A00_-No.-No.-No_2E00_.aspx) for anyone concerned with DX10/9Ex(L) and WinXP "hacks".

Indie efforts to establish WinXP DX10 compatibility may produce results, but I wouldn't count on it.

ah so it is a DX9 for vister ok.

So basically we will be dependent on the devs to make the games XP compatible I wonder how long till vister only games....

I imagine it'll be a while yet. No publisher is going to limit their sales to only those customers with Vista, which, for the time being, is a minority.

XP will be around a long time. As long as you don't need DX10 extras, I wouldn't be concerned.

And FYI/IMO: calling it "Vister" makes you look... er... unsmart.

yes yes I know "vister" has a backwater country ring to it, but its currently on its way to becoming ME 2 ,prehaps i should call it that.

Or you could just call it Vista. ME is pretty much synonymous with "crap" and so too will Vista become if it's as bad as you believe. No need for creative nicknames.

but ME2(vista) is bad :X

once the bugs get fixed and the drivers updated its not so bad but for now its ME2 and most people agree with that statement.

NO OPERATING SYSTEM IS PERFECT AT RELEASE!

Get that through your thick skull. No amount of lab testing will reveal the real-world bugs.

Note the .1 part. That's not a full release.

It was not an upgrade. It was a completely new addition to the Microsoft Windows experience! T_T[/marketing guy]

It was still just an interface upgrade for DOS anyways.

Hacked DX10 for XP appears

A young San-Diego based hacker claims he has made a version of DirectX 10 that allows the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista.

From developing a new set of compatibility libraries, Windows XP users may be able to run games coded for Microsoft's new DirectX 10 set of application programming interfaces. Currently DX10 is exclusive to Vista due to the reliance on Vista's Windows Display Driver, but that could all be about to change. Called the "Alky Project" the reverse-engineered Geometry Shader code may even allow DX10 games to be played on x86-based Macs running OS X as well as Linux.

If you're game you can install a pre-release version of the compatibility libraries. To install the libraries, users must copy seven DLL files to the System32 subdirectory. But you might want to try this on a spare machine.

So MS just copy pasted the DLL system or what?
