Claim Says Behavior Of White Officers Was "Far Worse"
posted April 9, 2007

Former Chattanooga City Police Officer Aharon Patrick Welles has filed a federal discrimination suit against the Chattanooga Police Department, former Chief Steve Parks, and the city of Chattanooga.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Chattanooga on Monday by attorneys Stuart James of Chattanooga and McCracken Poston of Ringgold.

Attorney James said, "Welles, an African-American and a 12-year veteran of the city police department, was terminated after admitting that he had consentual sexual relations with a white woman during his lunch break from duty."

He said, “This case is not about the act of consensual sexual relations during this officer’s lunch break. It is about the unequal and far better treatment of other, white officers by the city police administration – white officers who were investigated and found to have committed equal or even worse behavior.”

There's a lot of data missing from this one.

(1) Lunch break. Is an officer technically still on duty (can you be recalled from your lunch break to do your job or can you perform you duty while on your lunch break (such as writing tickets) during a lunch break) during lunch break?
(2) The attorney has made the claim that other officers have commited worse acts while at lunch and be let off. He'd better be ready to back up such a claim with facts, otherwise it's just hot air.
(3) As you say Zippy, where was it done? At home? In the car (especially the police car)? Where?

And I'm sure there are other questions. It sounds like the video game issue. Something happened, someone got in trouble, blame something else rather than the person who commited the act.

Need more info is the best way to handle this one.

It’s another black and white issue, hehe. Unfortunately the information that is given leave us in the gray. I agree this guy needs to backup his claim, but I see this as being something that was spit out in hopes of a settlement.
