STOCKHOLM, Sweden*Apr 3, 2007*(AP)—*Metallica may work as a name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to persuade authorities it's also suitable for a baby girl.
Sweden's tax agency rejected Michael and Karolina Tomaro's application to name their 6-month-old daughter after the legendary rock band.
"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."
Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."
In Sweden, parents must get the names of their children approved by the tax authority, which is in charge of the population registry and issues personal identification numbers, similar to Social Security numbers in the United States.
Tomaro, who has appealed the decision, said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."
The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.
The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.
"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

This strikes me as an oddity. Why should a government regulate what people should be named??? Some parents are naming their kids werid names in resistance...

What would you name yours??

"Urworstnitemarelol"
"Urmom"
"Desu"
"Sauron"
"Forthehorde"
"Leeroyjenkins"

and those are all FIRST names.

My math tutor showed me this story first, BTW. wanted to give her credit.

Wow. I think Dimmu Borgir would be better.

Emma is named for Emma Frost, after we found out she may possibly have the mutant gene....

There's a pic of her at 1 being held by Emma Frost at the SDCC. ^_^

Also, WTF, Metallica hasn't made a good song since what, 1990?

I can see the goverment wanting to keep the culture of its people by enforcing some odd traditions.......prehaps people should be thankful that parents get to keep their kids when they can not name them from "4chan" randomness.....

Well, the traditions obviously don't mean much to these people, so what good is it?

Shi-thead - yes someone actually named their kid ****head.
As-shole- yep thats asshole.

and the worst sign of laziness in naming a kid

Ab-c-de - thats right abcde

I'm with Lewis Black, the person who fills out the Birth Certificate should be able to look at the parents and say NO!

A bunch of the countries around Germany have stupid laws like that. There's actually a list of state-approved names that you have to pick from. I'm surprised people are allowed to wipe their own arses without asking permission first.

What would you name yours??

Inigo Montoya

Edward is a good name too.

That much I'm with, some parents do it because they think it's funny and don't bother thinking that they're ****ing up their kid for life.

heh.

Wife remembers a girl in her school with the first name Georgia, last name Cobb and middle name Peach. Cute name. But Metallica? Why not "Iron Maiden" "Lil' Ms. Quite Riot?" Mott Lee Crue? Acee DeeCee?

I can go on forever...

Alice Cooper is another one. :P

OMG I'm gonna ask my wife if "Dio" is OK for a boy, or failing that "Ronnie James".

Okay, but if you really want the names, then you should have some bad alternatives ready -- like, James Kirk or Leonides.

Up until 6 months or so we were wavering between Emma and B'lanna (as in torres). James Kirk is an awesome name though.

speaking of kirk its rare to find a pause talker anymore out side of shanter doing the character but In Karin Winner the vampire hunter character dose allot of pausing + bad grammar one off the wall one liners...its like anime+zippy speak+full shanter voice over(yes I know hes to old but thats besides the point)....I almost did not recover from hitting the floor laughing so hard.
