Hi all. I was wondering if anyone knows the legality of using a slide tool to play imported PS2 games. mind you, this is not refering to playing burned disks or anything like that, I've actually bought these games and own them, but due to Sony's F-ing retarded region encoding, I can't play them without using some form of mod, and the least expensive item i could find was a slide tool and boot disc.

So, is that legally safe or is it some kind of violation?

Just asking.

A slide tool is a small device that is used in conjunction with special software that allows a person to play imports and backups on the ps2 without sodering on the boards. It's a small flat plastic card with a handle that is slid under the lip of the dvd tray in a ps2 to override the region encoding. heres some info.

Should be legal, i made one from a safeway club card....its not like it can only be used illegally, the ps2 doesnt have a way to get out disks if hitting the button doesnt work so it seems reasonable...you will get van'd for burning games though.

well ebay calls it gray device and dosent like swap magic,I call it fair use to get import and backups running,if you want to be 100% on the right side of the man you'll have to bone up and buy a import system.

If you could care less do what needs to be done to play your 100% retail games.

I genrealy could care less what the corporate horde thinks.

In Canada it's 100% legal.

In the US... They'd probably charge you with DMCA violations, but they wouldn't be able to make them stick, because they couldn't justify it....

At first I thought you said "slide rule", and I was like "WTF? Slide rules are illegal now?"

I'm using it to play retail games, so they wouldnt' be able to get my for anything. hell, I could counter sue for them using region encoding which prevented me from playing my Legal games on my legal ps2, but that would just be wastefull :p

I use it to play retail games as well, because my PS2 is on its last legs. Of course its been a while because GH2 is living in there now.

if you need a new lens for it let me know ,altho if you ar enot a hardcore moder I suggest moving to a slim line as their lens units are half the price of the older large model.

they even have 60$ black and white HD cases with conversion adapter for the slim lines their kinda neat to.

It's very much legal here in Norway, where I live, too. I'm more concerned about the US, though there was a case in Britain about the legality of mod-chips which was won by Sony. That's mod-chips, though, and it infringed on some kind of patent thingy, which is why Sony won.

modchips have been illicit in the states for a few years since the DMCA.

the issues in the UK were similar it violates the tech or copy protection thus its baned.

oh ya the PS3 can run any region game unless the devs go out of their way to enforce regions the UK PS3 can only play UK movies and PS2/PSX games are still regioned.

You think the region-locker has a Region 0 like DVDs do? Rebellious developers/publishers should make use of it.

I think they made BR movies not run on un region ed devices or was it later DVD or was it Hdvd....in any case the PS3 is far from un region ed its more cross region ed,I can see them flipping the money switchs in a couple years full time to control money flow via region....

for now most if not all PS3 games are unregioned

EA can make games not work in as many places as they wish its up to the dev to reoginize the games.
