Praised: He ventured outside the Green Zone™ to visit a market that has seen many bombings in the past.
Criticized: He did so with 20 Humvees and 150 troops, and proclaimed the area "more secure" than it was under Saddam's rule...

See, McCain shouldn't have gone there with all those men. I mean, it's not like they would have taken him alive so he wouldn't have to worry about a repeat of his time as a POW.
I think it's stupid when Republicans go to Iraq, try to prove how safe it is just by being there, but end up with a huge escort because realistically it isn't even close to safe.

Don't forget it has to be very hush hush until they arrive so there are no "Peacefull Welcome Rockets"

Plus with 150 troops it's easy declare it "safe".

To McCain's critics on this I call shennanigans. A Democrat visiting the area would have gone with the same level of protection; and depending on how the polls were going at the time, would have made the same declaration.

Wait, what? How would a hypothetical visit by a democrat in any way make our criticisms less valid?

I'm saying that if a Democrat or a politician of liberal persuasion had gone under the same circumstance and made the same declaration there would have been virtually no criticism from the media.

A democrat wouldn't go there and be all like "Oh look at how safe it is! It is always this safe and has nothing to do with the Battalion of green berets and the mech suit I'm wearing...". Hence, criticism.
In spite of this I still would rather have him president over Bush. Hell even Dukakis WITH the tank would be OK.

And your proof is....?
Or is this one of those 'faith' things that we just have to agree on because it may be so?

I thought he wanted the draft returned so that the "rich child excemption" would (in theory) disappear.
They thought it was stupid that only the lower rungs of society were filing most of the ranks in the front-line troops.

Funny thing abotu that the rich kids can still move or claim collage so the lower classes will have to do all the work....

I think he also said that part of the draft included not just recruitment, but free university education. So when they are done their tour, they don't get stuck at a dead end min wage job, they have the education for a better job. (Do they do that in the US? Can't remember...)
The Cdn military does that. They'll pay for your university/college degree, you just "owe" them so many years service in return (can be served in the reserves).

that sounds better than giving them collage time and making them pay it back, the US should fully rethink its current army setup give people free collage within reason and then contract them to serve for 5 or 9 years at least something to balance out the peace time money issues they have.

Of course the problem with his ingenious plan was that people can get exceptions for having positions in the govt and such. Bush could just make his daughters princesses or something...

WRONG Democrats have been over there, even one Senator Hillary Clinton. She did not declare it more safe than under Saddam. I'll find a better article later but

Clearly, the solution is to give every individual there 100 bodyguards. Then, it will truly be safe.

At this point, GPK feels a disturbance in the Force, and the urge to hurt something.
