Hi guys, got something I wanna run by ya.

WHen I drive to work, I normally listen to one of 2 things. Talk radio, and my psp, which has my music on it. Recently, while doing some google searchs on various forms of media, I noticed that, among the younger demographic, the so called "OLD media", I.E., cnn, fox, abc, and so forth, they were rapidly losing that younger group. "New Media" has the widest demographic spread but also the hardest division between age groups. New media has a far higher young person ratio VS old media, but it's still mosty late 20's and 30's. Among early 20's and and teens, there is, and seems to have long been, only one truly popular media. Care to guess?

Thats right, Video Games, among all known media, Video games have the highest number of late teen and Early 20's, with a good number of late 20's, and decresing numbers as the age increases, although the wii is helping to shift that.

So, this has led me to the following theory.

The main reason why many of the so called "last generation" are against games, especially the Politicians, is that more then just content. In fact, content just makes a convient excuse. It's cause Video games are the new, truly free form of media. Lets face it, anyone who thinks that Washington has no control or influence over the "old media" is deluded. Cnn, abc, nbc, fox? All of them show severe and clear political bias. Fox is hard right, as is most of talk radio, the others are hard left.

New media is no better, as said above, most of talk radio, I.E. Rush, sean hannity, mark levin, Micheal savage, are extremely hard left.

But Video games, in many ways, are free of this, for the most part. Lets face it, when was the last time anyone of us noticed a clear political message in a commerical game. Part of it, and part of the reason that Old media, and even "new media" are losing the younger demographic, is that most game makers are interested in making fun, enjoyable, and thrilling games, with impressive stories and idea, instead of making political statments. I think thats why Politicans hate it so much. It represents something they do not understand and thus don't control. The debate about content, at least for the politicans, has little to do with "Protecting the Children", as many of us pointed out. it's more about them trying to control a source of media they have no direct influence in.

But anyway, thats just my theory, Feel free to discuss it.

Oh, and KN, being my primary political nemisis, I'm interested in your take on this theory as well. But, try to be civil :)

So, anyone agree, disagree? Think i'm reading to much into it? Lets discuss it, cause lord knows, it's about the only honest discussion of it were likely to find in this day and age.

Hah, that's exactly right. With the exception of the Japanese government, who could just clamp on to Nintendo or Sony at any time and put happy fun time propaganda in games. But yeah, I'm pretty sure they fear that 'unauthorized' opinions will be spread through video games.

Just show them Metal Gear Solid. They'll blow a ****ing gasket over that alone.

Oh god would they ever. You know, as much as I like the ranting of guys like rush and sean, it's hard to take it seriously some times. By the same token, I no longer watch CNN or any other major news due to the bias. But i love games.

It's pretty clear that games could be the next big media, but because of the fact that games are still free from goverment control, they focus more on actuallly being entertaining and enjoyable and less on politics, if at all.

Sometimes KN, you and I can agree, at least when we aren't hurling jabs at one another. ;)

Politicians have a long long LONG history of banning any speech they don't have control over. Just look at the ancient worlds when certain religions were made illegal.

I like to listen to Talk Radio most mornings (Yes, Limbaugh) but sometimes it gets to be too much for me to take (you know what I mean, when he stops talking for himself and starts being a mouthpiece for the Bush Administration and will eventually make himself look like a dumbass) and I listen to Rush instead. Or Dio.

I watch a bit of the news, but mostly so I'll get the jokes on Colbert and Daily Show. However, I spend a lot of time with supcom, WC3, WoW and misc other video games. I agree that politicians haet videogames because of the messages and the lack of knowledge of the messages. I mean, in mulitplayer supcom, the message is "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail", which is something Bush would disagree wtih because he feels it's fine to go to war on false pretenses without having a clue as to what's going to happen after the initial victory.
