Edit* http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/11/plane.crash.ap/index.html Here is the link to the story. It is short right now but give it time for things to develop.

Not an act of terrorism.

Fixed wing aircraft.

Two confirmed casualties.

I saw this on the news a few minutes ago. Reports from people on the ground say that a light aircraft was performing stunts in the air. Doesn't seem to be a terrorist deal.

I changed the title of the thread. These vague titles bug me. ;)

Joe Torre said the plane is registered to Lidle...this seriously sucks.

Who is this Lidle, and why should I care more about him than any other human being? =/

Enough for news outlets to sensationalize for the rest of the week.

"Lidle" = Cory Lidle, one of the starting pitchers for the New York Yankees.

CNN updated their article to say that Lidle had been flying with his instructor at the time of the accident. They found his pilot log, which shows shows 88 hours of cockpit time, 47 in command. I'm not familiar with how many hours a pilot needs to earn his or her license (1000?), but I would think that indicates someone starting out. The accident could have simply been pilot error.

You know... if you flip 9/11/01 180 degrees you get 10/11/6.

OMG conspiracy!

It depends on the type of license. In Canada, a Recreational Permit only requires 25 hours total, including 12 hours solo, but only allows the pilot to fly 25 NM from the airfield of origin. Private requires 45 hours, 17 PIC (Pilot In Command), and a two-stop cross-country trip, and the pilot can fly anywhere.

I'm not familiar with licensing in the US, though, but 88 hours is likely enough to hold a license to fly cross-country (which doesn't mean across the country, just to other airfields) in VFR conditions (Visual Flight Rules, basically you can see something like five miles, and you're clear of cloud.)

That's why I'm glad that's not how we write dates.

You know, they never found the wreckage to that plane. How can they account for that?
