I doubt I'm the only person to try SL after all the attention it's been getting lately, so... here's a thread where we can talk about it.
Here are my first impressions:
Building and scripting are fun, but I still haven't quite figured out what the point of the game is. Judging by the sexy-but-boring avatars that most people sport, I'm guessing that pretty much anyone who doesn't create is just there for the sex. Haven't seen all that much of it yet, but I did encounter one vendor selling realistic animal penises, and there are furries everywhere.
Also, the game's sheer potential for drama continues to amaze me. I've been reading a bit of Prokofy Neva's blog (http://secondthoughts.typepad.com/) lately, and ye gods that woman is crazy. She takes Second Life so seriously that I really have to wonder if a certain lawyer is right about the line between fantasy and reality being blurred for some gamers. Never seen it in any other MMO -- even the most hardcore WoW players know they're not really orcs or elves -- but some Second Life players honestly seem to identify more with their avatars than anything in real life.
Anyone have any thoughts on the topic? Or should we just use this thread to show off what we've built/scripted? I'm happy either way :)

You can, and I think it's kind of stupid how people spend money on something that isn't even real. So... I just play for free and mess around with basic scripts.

Oooooo. And what do people do in this game, if their not messing with scripts? Relaxing in their E mansions? Or is this a great place for cybering?

Um... they go to pretend parties and then have pretend sex with pretend women/animals/children (I'm not even joking there -- the game has a reputation for attracting sexual deviants), and some of them even spend real money to do all this. Yeah, it's crazy, but for those of us who are content to just hide in a corner and create stuff, it does have some appeal.

Yeah... and there are animations that people can use to dance or have sex or whatever. Some of the toys that people have scripted are kind of fun to play with too.

Hmmm sex over a virtual world. Sounds intresting, but alas my attention is already spread thin, between pc gaming, console gaming and table top gaming. Maybe when I have free time, Ill get the game and we can be both bored and have nothing to do lol.

I can second that. I had fun tooling around in a go kart I found once, and someone was nice enough to let me have a copy of a flying Delorean.

According to my PC magazine a few months ago, there is a thriving escort company in second life where people actually go online just to provide virtual "companionship".
I keep considering SL but I just don't quite get it. What level of programming skill do yuo need to make something and what level of customisation do you have on a basic subscription?

It would appear so.
The journalist "bought" the service and I have to say the article is possibly one of the most tragically pathetic things I've ever read. Mainly because his virtualy animated member wouldn't work...so he couldn't even get it up online...

No, I found a go kart hat was scripted to stick to a track, I got a glying Back to the Future style DeLorean from someone else. I'd also seen an F Zero Blue Falcon

I know from personal experience fro ma free item that the scripted commands can be a royal pain. Some do have a HUD with buttons that makes it much easier.

But who is to say what we do spend money is real? or for that matter even worth spending money on?
If you spend money on a game, a video game isnt 'real'. The disk is and so is the coding. but then the stuff that is created from such programing, would that not be real? If it isnt then the programing isnt real. And thus all you are doing is spending $50 on a piece of plastic and a brand name.
Like in the matrix, is not what we define as real nothing more then chemical and enectronic singles sent into our supposedly real brains?
Sure if we bought a artical of virtual clothing, we cant touch it, smell it or anything, but we can see it and put it on our avatar. We spent money on it, just the same as we could have spent money on a real shirt, or the latest final fantasy. But then again, as we didnt really need the virtual shirt, we didnt need a real shirt or the lastest final fantasy.

No but spending real life money to get some digital escorts to provide sex and not having your vitual member not work is sad and a waste of money.

That's a good point. What about time being the currency? Would you say that playing 60 hours to get your character in EQ or WoW better equipment a waste of time? Just as with money, is it a waste of money to pay to see a band play live? All you do is stand and watch them.
I play second life very little, only venturing in when some friends and I feel like shooting up sex clubs without restrictions on creating objects and pushing people (Why would people not put those on?). Although, I read the SL Safari quite often (A good fisticuffs with that Profosky Neva, or however you spell it). (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/second-life-safari/index.php)

Well, to me, a game provides hours of entertainment that I would not have without spending the money. A shirt in Second Life is unlikely to make me have any more fun, and I'd rather look good in real life than in a virtual world, so... that's why I don't think virtual property will give me much bang for my buck. Besides, I can make my own clothing in the game with a relatively minimal amount of effort, so why pay other people to do it for me?
Oh, and I'm also a regular reader of Second Life Safari. Prokofy Neva makes me giggle -- she's such a nutjob, and she doesn't seem to realize it.

I've noticed that of the people who start building, most are able to do really cool stuff within a week or so. The initial learning curve is a bit steep, but once you figure out how to manipulate primitives in 3D, it's really really easy to impress all the other people who are too intimidated by the build option to even try it.
And... just because I'm a total attentionwhore, here are some avatar costumes that I've created in the past few days:
Octopus (this is the one that I wear most of the time):

I played second life once, a few months ago maybe.
On one hand, it's fun to wander around and see what sort of things users have come up with. And if you look around, you can find some cool stuff. A few examples form what I can remember include: A cannon you can shoot yourself out of, An island covered in ruins and plant life, an upside down house, and a canyon you can take an innertube down.
On the other hand, While I found plenty of cool stuff, what I found more of were random shops. Lots of shops. And some of them aren't even structured. Just a place somebody dumped a bunch of random stuff into with a sign that says "BY PLZ!" in front of it. Not that shops are a bad thing. But sometimes I can't help but feel that's the only thing out there.
Over all? I'd wander around as a free user (And I'd try it again if I had a computer that could run it properly), but I'm not sure this is the kind of thing I'd put money into.

I know what you mean. I find the shopping aspect of the game incredibly boring, and it seems strange to me how so many people will spend real money just to pump up their avatars' sex appeal and have pretend internet sex with random strangers.
Personally, I prefer to spend my time on Second Life building and scripting. As an attentionwhore, I love how the only thing easier than creating cool stuff is impressing people with a few prims stuck together and worn as an avatar :)

Today, I got insulted by Prokofy Neva. My life is now complete :D She's gotta be my favourite person on the entire grid... so educated, so well-spoken, and so incredibly crazy.
I was lurking near a protest against the new Electric Sheep Company search engine (which I think is a great idea, personally) when Prok showed up. She swore up a storm, described us as fetid something-or-other, accused me of working for the company in question (I said a few things in their defense), and eventually left. It was highly amusing, and I really hope I run into her again.

Oh, there's always a chance... just as there's always a chance that everyone's favourite lawyer is only roleplaying and enjoying himself online. The thing is, she's kept this up for ages, both on SL and on her blog. She has also been banned from multiple sites. In any case, whether she's serious or not, everyone else finds it damn funny :)

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!

Through the wonders of voice, I made two white nationalists listen to Village People today. One of them precipitously left the room, while the other stuck around and whined until I played something else :)
For my next challenge, I want to get a bunch of anti-racist commies together and make them listen to Skrewdriver :D
I am SO going to get banned one of these days...

Puffy-fish is superior to anything I walk around in, but here we go.
This is something you must fear (http://www.hobobucket.com/sl/feartheduckling.jpg). I don't see enough fear yet. FEAR IT!

Today my avatar put on a fursuit and a SS officer's uniform and joined several similarly-attired furries in an attempt to annex Furnation. So far we have convinced one land owner to temporarily change the name of his/her (boobies + giant penis == ?) parcel to reflect the dominance of the Furr'd Reich :D

We started by sneaking around in boxes....
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/origamifrog/Snapshot_104.jpg
But eventually, we got bored and went to find some locals. Here we can be seen asking a young furry if she had accepted Hitler into her life.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/origamifrog/Snapshot_107.jpg
The answer being a resounding "Nein", we threw copies of Mein Kampf at her, offered some kindly advice ("Yiff mach frei"), and continued on our journey.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/origamifrog/Snapshot_108.jpg
After a few similar attempts, we gave up and went to a furry strip club. Strangely enough, our appearance didn't seem to faze the half-naked furries. Only one commented on our attire, and the rest largely ignored us. I can only assume they were busy fapping.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/origamifrog/Snapshot_111.jpg
Now, as it just so happened, there was a griefing attack on the sim right when we were there. One of the furries in our party -- ironically, the only one who WASN'T wearing a SS uniform -- was blamed, but it soon became obvious that it was part of the Patriotic Nigras' 9/11 celebration. To the best of my knowledge, none of us got in any trouble, and thus the day was declared a success.

Mission accomplished. I was, unfortunately, only able to play part of the Skrewdriver song because my target (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/origamifrog/Snapshot_101.jpg) (seen here in an older screenshot, but neither he nor his surroundings have changed much) started playing L'Internationale loudly in his end when he realized what it was. Later on that evening, I got him and a couple of other anti-racist commies to listen to Nazi parade music (and even a bit of Landser!) without complaint.

I play because I like the social aspect, and I enjoy creating things from time to time. It's also fun messing with people, and there have been some pretty epic griefing attacks.
Speaking of which... there's a plot of land on SL that belongs to a small group (read: 4 people who never log on) of German neonazis who are associated in some way with Junge Nationaldemokraten. Anyway, they forgot to turn off build permissions and haven't been online in over a week, so some of the game's resident anti-racists decided to redecorate, shall we say....

Taste is taste, no?

Yea, depends on actions.
Just right, as that age should. ;)
pedos are grouped together from teens to tots they are hated equally, fictional stuff is also frown on even when its 100% fictional, lite pedoisims would fall under fictional, however a need to keep it "unrealistic" needs to be in place, having realistic shaped kids doing multi tited/dcked sht is a bit much altho I would find it as humorous as the furry extremes, keep the models/avs loli or anime style that should help some I guess is what I am saying *yawns* if I kow what I am saying *L*
I guess I am gettign at fictional sht is fictional sht if one extreme is bad they all are.,pluss if you let in the pedos you can monitor them and report them if they try and share any IRL info of their hobbies ^^, after al one must keep ones friends close and ones enemies closer ^^
Taste is in the eye or gut of the beholder it seems I loath blade for being tasteless but it seems others like the gothy vampy posh trash pooyness of it.
Well, i was banned during their "Child Porn" ****e. I didn't do anything, but my Avatar was a Loli.
I once argued with someone, just to piss him off, on how if loli is illegal, no children should be allowed to be portrayed in any cartoon whatsoever, because children are not allowed or licensed to work, use weaponry, hold office or build supercomputers. You know, it's kinda like the "if you argue god cannot be disproven, you must also consider the same for unicorns and the pink invisible dragon in my garage" argument.

I dunno I prefer hentai to porn so I am messed up,
pedos that hurt kids(under 13)are the blight on mankind but the problem is how to handle it in a non humping a dead horse kinda way, like the guy that got life for having kidde porn pics but never did anything else its akin to the old gay porn stuff in the 50s however this stuff is less legit because it involves children and because they are involved both sides pop their heads is disgusting ways, real (not realistic) kiddy porn itself should be a minor crime rape should be a high crime, sex with a teenager(14+) should be a case by case thing not automatically written off as rape sorry human sexuality is just that simple if law is brought in it should look at it fairly and go from their...but what do I know I am just a 30yr virgin who never dates and warms himself by the glow of the monitor light.

Most girls like to date their equal in "maturity" ^^
I'm used to arguing my points. :)
I agree. The problem is society's definition of "hurt".
It isn't the same. It describes different age-classes. Pedophilia implies 4-11, and it's pretty accurate in my ace. I think Ephebophilia is around 12-16, isn't it?
13-19, wikis page is not very precise on age merely defines it as adolescents , I should also sate I do not have a exclusive interest in adolescents it seems to be leaning in that direction .... heavily ...LOL
Separation of fantasy is the key a pedo can live a normal life as long as he/she dose not "touch" kids, its like the gay thing with the boyscouts and army just because you are attracted to dose not mean you ...screw.... LOL
society has alot of growing up to do >>

I actually disagree on that. Our society's ideas on Sexuality, are conservative to a point where it is ridiculous. Back when i was 15, i had a relationship with an 11 year old. While it was actually legal, people still thought it was sick, and the whole thing ended when her ****ing dad beat me up, then moved to another city. Civilization? THIS! IS! MADNEEEES!
Well... maybe it is sick. I mean, I have some pretty weird (though thankfully legal) fetishes myself, but I don't pretend that they are or should be 100% socially acceptable.

Define "touch", groping and sexual activity with a child (12 and under), sorry there is no leverage here at least with animals there is some leeway.
I will agree that a theres nothign wrong with a 3-6 year age diffrance in at or under the age of consent(16) when you have kids that have known each other for years and what not, the whole zero tolerance thing is assnie, when you have a 19 year old toss in jail for sleeping with his 16 year old GF that hes been a friend of for 10 years is fukign assinie.
as society(or the elite) becoems more corrupt it places even heavier restrictions on itself until it implodes from the stress.

Not according to advanced psychology. Statistcs say that around 56% of children offended, take damage from it. At the same time, only 2% of all Pedosexually active people, are "true" pedophiles, meaning they have a social interesting in children, with a sexual dimension. The rest are situational offenders. So it is VERY likely, that the children treated with respect and choice, are the ones falling into the unhurt category.
I believe she stated that it should be soemthign to think abotu to react to this dose not mean it should be dissmised.
The trouble is there is no choice for a child in this matter this is the line that can not be crossed.

No there is not,you can not lead a devolping being off track for kicks, its even true for adolescents but more so for kids memory, development, understanding are all pliable and thus should NOT be plied, unlike the effect media has on the masses this is more akin of shooting a traspasser on your land you can simply not do it and even if you are assaulted and had the right to do it you will be judged by your peers, on this siding with caution takes president over adult urges.
there is no pass go here there is no leeway.

Okay, agree to disagree.
Anyone know if the Linux Installer works? My new avatar is Called Cherish Reina, look me up. :)
Just extract the game into an appropriate folder and you're good to go. I'm running SL on SUSE right now from the /tmp/ directory, of all things -- I'm on a school computer and my account is too small -- and it works just fine.

I know. But it says Alpha. Should i just WINE the .Exe?
Just use the Linux client. It's not perfect, but in terms of stability, it seems pretty similar to the Windows client, and... well... wine sucks :p

Wine is great, provided you know how to use it. ;)
It has its uses, but I prefer to use software compiled for Linux whenever possible.

It's not really worth the effort, when it doesn't come in package installers. All the terminal stuff gives me headaches. :p
In SL's case, I literally just downloaded the archive, extracted it to /tmp/, and double-clicked on the secondlife executable. No need to drop to the command line.

You know, it's kinda like the "if you argue god cannot be disproven, you must also consider the same for unicorns and the pink invisible dragon in my garage" argument.
So you admit that the possibility that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created us could be real?

I choose my mythology based on how delicious it is. So yes.

Are you saying it didn't?
No, I'm strongly stating it did :O You can't disprove me! *runs*

I was bored so I created a cartoony prim picture of my avatar and stuck it to the wall on an anti-racist parcel.

I've been building again... took a break from all the Nazi stuff to decorate for Hanukkah :D

I want to make some Christmas stuff too, but I have yet to come up with an idea that hasn't been done to death by more talented builders than myself.
Oh, and the dreidels are scripted to spin when clicked, and each candle flame can also be toggled with a click. Building and scripting are so much fun :D
