Mythic are bringing us Warhammer Fantasy in MMO form by the end of the year. As huge a fan as I am of this game I did kind of wonder why there wasn't a Warhammer 40K MMO coming out, seeing as how its a more popular franchise.
...I guess they heard (http://au.gamespot.com/news/6166560.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6166560)

Yep. I read about it yesterday. Im so amped up. With my chainsword and holy bolter I will wreck havok on the enemies of the emperor!
Also Dagrak, Boom Studios just released a some warhammer 40k comics, called damnation crusade. I believe their on issue 2. Its very good art and the story follows the Black Templars.
One thing though: everyone will want to be a Space Marine.
How do you justify that? There are like, what, 50 chapters with 1000 members each (excluding the Grey Knights, which have 3000). If this gets even 40% of WoW's subscribers, you can bet 70% of them will be Space Marines. Are they just going to make up ten billion new chapters to accommodate them?

Apparently someone doesn't pay attention to the Orks spam...
There's a lot of /b/-tards who will want to purge the universe of aliens and mutants, but i'm sure there will be those who wish to play the other factions.
Not me though...FOR THE EMPEROR!

Yeah, there's a lot of Ork spam too.
Chaos shows up every now and then.
Then there's like this ONE guy who plays Eldar ;p
And a lot of Orks opens up another question:
A massive Ork population would generate a **** ton of Waagh. I think at that point, they will be so strong they just regenerate limbs.

I'm more of a WFRP fan, but 40K is cool too.
Main thing I like about WFRP is the presence of Skaven. I don't think they're in the 40K universe, and that makes me sad :(

Alas, in the Warhammer Fantasy MMO (http://www.warhammeronline.com) coming out Skaven are not a playable race, your choices are Empire, Elf, Dwarf and Greenskin (orks and goblins), Dark Elves and Chaos (Tzeentch). Its looking to be a very entertaining game I have to say...provided its not Vista only which I worry every game is going to be soon.
As for Space Marines, they'll only give you one chapter as they have with the Single campaigns of the most recent Dawn of War games. Personally I'd like to play Chaos or Necron...my Warhammer 40K knowledge died when I was 15 and stopped playing the game...now its in computer form its suddenly very appealing again!

I wonder which factions you'll be able to play as. The Imperium of Mankind is a given, which means the Imperial Guard and Adeptus Astartes will be in there. The forces of Chaos are a given as well. Though the question is which of the Ruinous Powers will be represented. The only other factions that could be playable would be the Eldar, the Orks, and most likely the Tau Empire. It will be interesting to see how this game will turn out, and I'll be sure to keep an eye on it.

The only Vista-only games are those that demand DX10. And the only one without DX9 support I've seen so far is Halo 2 Vista. So it's not that big a deal. Most PC companies, however, will be going through the Games for Windows cert process, if only to boost sales. GFW, however, does not mean Vista only.

Im guessing the first races to pick, are space marines, eldars, orks, and chaos.

Agreed, personally I think this world would work best as a sort of MMO battlefront game. Seeing as its all about the shooting.

Maybe for the Tau, but the other races have awesome melee too...

Its going to be hard to shoot up a dreadnaught or wraithlord. I dont even know how the hell would you fight a Monolith on without heavy vehicles.

Myself and KN were thinking that after you hit max lvl, you could do a quest, die, and be reborn a lvl 1 dreadnaught/equivalent.

To quote one of the people from the Warhammer Fantasy MMO "But how will people cyber?"
Would be rather cool though...if a bit limiting

That would be so hot. I would so go and get killed to be a dreadnaught.

I'm taking it there are a few hardcore Warhammer 40k fans here. I used to collect the minatures but never really played it. I was a big fan of the fantasy and the 40K races though.

I used to play as a Skaven/Undead/Nurgle host about 10 years ago. I religiously collected models, painted them until my friends and I decided to have our first big war...two hours in and our armies had barely reached each other. I'd decimated the Ork army (who was cheating) with Nagash but got bored when I tried to take out the Dwarf army...never played again.

Chaos Gate wasn't too bad. I never played Firewalker but Dawn of War is certainly entertaining...if a little basic. Though I do love some of the animations, particuarly the Dreadnought and Daemon Lord.

Ah yes so it was.
I'm curious about how it will play too, I imagine it will be something like Star Wars galaxies though perhaps with less clicking. I doubt it will play like WoW with guns.

Yeah, im also curious in the classes too. Will it be limited like WAR, or will it be like star wars galaxies and have tons of classes.

It will be limited like WAR, no doubt about that. Warhammer 40K armies tend to be designed for specific functions, theres no real general class. The closest is the Space Marine but even they have a pre-defined role as the offensive warrior.
seductivpancakes
03-06-2007, 09:42 AM
Well yeah space marines are suppose to be all round offensive units, but different classes with different weapons like scouts can only use sniper rifles. Terminators has the autocannon and acts like tanker. Assault Marines excel in close combat more and like jump to the enemies.
And theres equipment. Space Marines are issued their standard holy bolter and power armor, so its considered damn near sacred to them, so they can get new equipment, also because they fear advancement in technology. So I was thinking the mmo will be FPS based. Like planet side, where skill upgrades and and your own skills will decide whos the winner in battle.

That was really what I mean't, that there are specific classes allready available.

I think it will be more 3rd person as supposed to FPS. They've already stated its an MMO and part of the appeal of those is customisation, which you can't really see in 1st person.
Thinking about it I can already guess some of the Space Marine classes:
Librarian
Chaplain
Inquisitor
Force Commander (I think thats the name)
I'm trying to think what Chaos would be but I can only think of two:
Champion
Sorceror
seductivpancakes
03-06-2007, 11:07 AM
I think inquisitor falls in with witch hunters.
I think there will be more classes in each race, if they want to keep it true to the tabletop and books. Here's what I had in mind:
Space Marines:
Librarian - for support auras and stuff.
Scout - The ranger class. Long range attacks
Apothecary - Healing as well as close combat.
Terminator - Heavy weapons and tanker.
Force Commander - The all around warrior of a thousand campaigns as well as officer class.
Chaos:
Lord - Main warrior, officer class.
Sorceror - Magic support, summoning, healing.
Obliterator - Tanker.
Khrone Bloodletter - Melee master.
Chaos Havoc: Heavy Weapons
Eldar:
Autrachs - Main Warrior, officer class
Warlocks - Support auras as well healing
Banshees - melee
Rangers - Long range attacks.
Dark Reapers - heavy weapons
Orks:
Warboss - Main warrior, officer class.
Nobz - Heavy attack, tanker
Storm boys - melee, can jump far to enemy.
Stik Bommas - Kinda of a explosive/suicidal unit with bombs.
Mek Boyz - Long ranged attacks as well as making small machines for support.

The interesting thing with Chaos is which god do they choose?
Khorne is traditional but limited to warriror/bloodthirsty types and mainly excludes magic
Nurgle is ugly and likely to be unpopular as no one wants to play a bloated fat man ...cept me
Slaneesh would require an Adults only rating and be filled with pervert Rpers or giggly schoolboys
Tzeentch is already being used in WAR (for the reasons above I'm sure) so they couldn't really use that.
They could cheat and go undivided but that always seems like a cop out to me.
And as fun as it sounds I can't see them having a suicide bomber as a player class!

Well I didnt want to get like to into the class development. I figure it would be simple for now. The thing about new mmos these days, is they try to appeal to all the noobs. They tend to forget about mmo veterans. So maybe choosing a god with different pros and cons maybe too complicated for noobs.
I was thinking depending one which chaos class you choose, they set you up with a god. Like they did with guild wars.
Yeah suicidal ork doesnt seem like it would happen, but they can just chuck grenades of all sorts at people. Explosive, emp, glue, slime, poison, etc.

Well as much as people cry for MMO's for MMO veterans the company is still a business and focusing on everyone has a higher revenue chance. Plus personally I like my MMO's fairly simple (I never did figure out how to get and improve crafting skills in Everquest 2) but with clever tactics available.
Only problem with the gods is you have to balance playability and lore. If they had all the Chaos gods being chummy with each other then the purists would complain bitterly.

Well yeah its still a business and they need to make the money but it doesnt mean they cant also appeal to veteran players. I talked to a developer of Flying Lab Software during NY comic con, who are making Pirates of the burning sea, another good mmo out this June in which I want badly, and he agreed with me that a mmo should appeal to both noobs and veterans. I wish was with the press, i asked him so much good questions.
I suppose we cant have the chaos gods all friendly like. I suppose they can unite together sorta of, to destroy all that is good, but they can pvp each other if they want lol. Thats pretty simple. You thinking it might play like planetside?

Never played Planetside so I can't really comment on that.
PoTBS sounds fairly interesting but I just can't seem to develop much fascination in it...though crushing all as the British Empire brings up a bit of long forgotten patriotism!
