What's the worst you've ever read or seen the contents of a game being minsunderstood, incorrectly interpreted, plot butchered, et cetera? I'll start with something local.
In their review of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the Boston Globe reported that the player is forced to kill a police officer on the first level... "an act as ugly as the scars that mar Max Payne's face". That one left me baffled for weeks. I was going to write a letter, but never did get around to it.
An Australian newspaper once stated that the object of Half-Life: Blue Shift was to kill security guards and steal their guns.

That Bully was a columbine sim without anyone having actually seen it yet?

Saying that The Sims was little more than a tool in a conspiracy to distribute porn to kids, when in fact all the creators did was give the community some dev tools and said "Go nuts."

That's the place where you alllegedly had to shoot a police officer. The only thing I can figure out is that the Boston Globe reporter somehow confused one of the Cleaners out to murder Max for a SWAT officer.

Someone's going to pop the mother of all boners when they finally get their hands on Second Life.
Which as we all know, is everything they claimed The Sims to be, and more.

very true, especially if he stumbles upon one of the furry areas.

I was more refering to the kiddy pron areas that keep popping up.
I don't think he would even begin to understand the furries. He'd probably think they're NPCs or whatever.

Good point.
Course, I doubt it'll get attacked, since th company that publishes it doesn't have the word take and the number 2 in the title, and the company that makes it isn't named after a musical profession.
Anyway, back on topic.
Phoenix Wright. Nothing they say on it's behalf describes how awesome it is.

Let's not get into things like this. Hopefull, people will notice that my first post does not include a link to every Deus Ex review that doesn't declare Walton Simons one of the greatest villians of all time. :p
Now now now, much as Deus Ex is one of the greatest first person shooters of all time (I love it to death), 'greatest villian' is a tie between SHODAN and Durandal.
Cause crazy AIs are hot.

What are the most blatantly misleading coverages of a game ?
Well, here are the ones I remember :
- In 1993, after a crazy guy took into hostage a French pre-school class (he was soon killed by our special forces), some in the media said that this guy became crazy after playing a Super Mario game : so he took pre-schoolers to "take more lives" and gold coins.
- In a 1999 press release, French parental watchdog "Familles de France" stated that Resident Evil involved slaughtering cops.
- In a 2002 French TV report, Virtua Fighter supposedly allowed to "beat women" (an accusation that often comes back about beat-them-ups involving female characters).
- And of course, there is Rule of the Rose, last november, when Rep. Bernard Depierre and Lionnel Luca accused the game of allowing the rape and brutal murder of a little girl.

I'd like to find out how the media came up with the equation that playing as police officers or security guards equals shooting police officers and security guards.

Well, it's simple : in Resident Evil, you play a cop who can be killed by zombies. So this game "involves slaughtering cops".

Here's hoping they never get their hands on the Police Quest series.
