Star Wars online also looked promising.

Every Star Trek movie as of late also looked promising...

But I hope the game will be awesome.

The fact that it's in the 25th century just opens up a ton of possibilities.

Experience has taught me that just because a game is being made with some loved, and well-known IP, does not automatically mean that the game will be good. In fact, 9 times out of 10, the game is crappy, as all of the focus goes to making the game *look* like the IP, and very little is to making the game worthwhile to play.

Yeah, new possible ways to SUCK! hahahaha. Seriously though, I'll kill a man to get in beta, I'll pre-order it, but if it turns out as bad as I think I will I'll be back to playing my lvl 80 panderaen in no time (which will be a playable race by the time this game is released: 2010).

The biggest thing that will make it work is if someone who's never heard of Star Trek before can start playing and pick up on everything and have fun with it.

I wonder if The Borg will be playable. I just want an excuse to say "resistance is futile" and fly around in a cube.

After the massive, crippling damage the two Janeways did to the collective in the series finale of Voyager, who knows?

You can only play as the Federation. Now if you could play as the Dominion I might be tempted...

Well all I have to say on the matter can be said with this graphic.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I would just be doing that the whole time in the game anytime somebody died. Seriously though is it going to be like the series and a whole bunch of blah blah blah lets think of a civil way out of this and banging alien women, I mean I would be up for the second part but not the first I want to blow **** up. But as nice as it looks I have a feeling this is going to go the same way the Starwars game did.

That second one was mostly reserved for the original series. This is taking place in a time period not covered yet.

So you mean there is a chance for more spoldie?

From what I understand, it takes place 50-100 years after Voyager/DS9 after some particularly nasty wars.

Nice....we can still bang alien women right? I mean it isn't authentic startrek unless I can sleep with women from different planets and star systems :D

Considering that it's the Federation, there will probably be enough races for that...though you may take serious damage if you engage in those acts with a Klingon.

Meh so I can't do a Klingon, well I could but I seriously don't want to. Plenty of other hot races around :D

.... I think I remember now why I stopped playing Star Trek RPs in Chat Rooms and forums..... *sigh* Oh well commence with the Photon Torpedo-ing of unsuspecting civilizations, and the such... that'll solve all that is not right, right?

This game will be vaporware for a long time. Hopefully it won't be cancelled like the Dune MMO (which would have been the best game ever).

Wait....there was supposed to be a Dune MMO? What the hell happened?

I already forsee a problem with this concept: too many captains and not enough ensigns. I've always sort of dreamed of how cool it would be to play some type of multiplayer space sim where a capital ship type vessel had to be operated by multiple people, ie: helmsman, tactical, navigator, engineer, security, captain.

but everyone would just want to fill in the fun roles and not the lame ones. it'd be herding cats.

You bring up a good point, but i gues if you have a single group of people who want to do the functional ship crew type of roleplaying than it might be awesome.

steelcobra

Or they could make it so that ships are a guild item. And that the ranking officers of the "Crew" would hold slotted positions.

DopeyCB
05-04-2007, 04:37 PM
yet another good point. That at least would limit the number of derelicts you'd find; due to crew error, to a minimum.

Ever since playing Lightspeed, i've wished for a multiplayer capital ship game. Lightspeed!

apparently the kid that paris and torres had joins star fleet which encourgaes lots of other klingons to meaning they are a playable race,

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek_Online

cardassians are playable, which could be fun

the fact that you have to go through the acadamy is a huge plus for me, if they are going to do this then they need to do it properly, i mean how lame will it be if everyone can be a captain by the end of the first month.

the game is apparently set 20 years after nemesis and has a new enterprise in it, which to be honest i find rather annoying, after all if akira and galaxy class ships are still about then why has the Sovereign class enterprise not around.

Xlorep DarkHelm
07-03-2007, 10:47 AM
It's less that the Soverign class isn't around, and more that the Enterprise gets upgraded to a new model when the old model either is decomissioned or destroyed.

steelcobra
07-03-2007, 11:01 AM
And with how prominent the missions the Enterprise is sent on are, it happens a bit more often than with science vessels, for example.

So in Star Trek online is it bad to be the un-named guy in the red uniform that gets sent on the away mission? :D

steelcobra

I hope that's an NPC who goes on away missions just to set off traps.

you woud think that they would just give up naming ships enterprise, i mean if you look through the history of the ships not one of them has lasted very long before been decomissioned or lost.

considering that ships such as the USS Excelsior have been in service for close to a 100 years it seems odd that the enterprise would be decomissioned after less then 30.

at some point you would think they would just drop it as a cursed ship

Xlorep DarkHelm
07-05-2007, 03:29 AM
I believe the Intrepid is actually much more cursed than Enterprise. The problem with the Enterprise is that it gets tangled in so many temporal distortions nobody really remembers all of the times the previous ships were destroyed, that information existed in an alternate reality.

Hmm... now would be a good time for this quote.

"As one of my television parents, the role models of Kirk, Spock and Bones aided me in the shaping of my morals and sense of adventure. However, I have failed in my quest to find any available Orion slave girls." - Unknown guest, taken from jumptheshark.com

I'll be happy just to finally have a Star Trek game to play with a bunch of nifty people who are also fans of the series. I just hope that the Game can live up to some of our hopes.

I would throw something from Star Wars into the game just to piss them off :D. Vulcan with a Lightsaber! Make the Borg Cube look like the Death Star, then it comes out that Star Trek online is just a bad expansion of SWG :D.

I hope not. I actually want to play the game. I just hope it has a more player-customizable skill/talent system than WoW.

I know this thread is old, but it's better than starting a new thread.

According to GameSpot (yes, I do still frequent there), the game is shelved, if not scrapped altogether.

GameSpot article:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/startrekonline/news.html?sid=6184895&om_act=convert&om_clk=newlyadded&tag=newlyadded;title;1

Finally, this week saw reports surface on MMORPG-centric site Warcry.com that Perpetual was shutting down Star Trek Online entirely (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26159347). Sadly, GameSpot has learned this report is completely true. A source with knowledge of Perpetual's inner workings confirmed that today is the last day of work for many game designers, programmers, and other developers at the company's San Francisco office.

Ah well, it was taking forever anyway.
