I want to learn how to make mods, since lots of people have told me that it's a great credential to have when applying for a job in the gaming business. I realize it will be very hard and I will have to learn a ridiculous amount of information, but I don't care. So, anyone who knows about modding or knows some books/websites/whatever about it, please enlighten me.

what kind of mods are you looking into,I am currently going over scripting for Unreal 1 threw 03 and Quake 4.
My focus is on item and weapons mods I have been able to change a few weapons in unreal 1, and edit values in UT03 ,I was good at(for a noob) with unreal 1 it was alot like HTML,newer scripting languages have more nuances of there own and for acoupel years I was turned off by it but now I am interested in it again and learning what to do bit by bit.
if you have any of these games I would be than happy to share my info and links with you ,I only wish others would join us and we all can help each other figure it all out.
I will say this I am still a noob when I get acouple of full weapon mods working on Q4 I will say I am noobish :P
I just got UT03 in but have yet to fool with it so the only one I know "allot" on is unreal 1 *L*
ask or PM me I would be mroe than willing to help, there are some mapping books for UT I know of they are good for grasping the basics of mapping and such ,scripting you cant find much on and when you do they ate mapping not scripting.
FYI:scripting is coding

I really don't know anything about modding, so I need to be educated about it. What kind of mods are there? I'd like to start with something easy, and try the more complex ones when I get better at it. I have UT2003 with the level editor, and I have the Half Life Platinum Collection (that's the original, OpFor, Blue Shift, Counterstrike, and Team Fortress.) I could probably find UT1 if I needed to. I appreciate the help, Zippy.

I have gone mad looking for help, its least I can do to dive another as crazy as I :P
there are 3 main types of 'moding'
Skinning/Textures/Modeling(no not that kind silly head)
Scripting and codeing
Map making
I have made some small simple maps with the unreal editor its not to bad but my thing is game play true maps is part of it but one thing at a time ;p

Tell me more about that one. I want a job as a character builder, so that one sounds perfect for me.

mind you my knowlage on this is 3rd hand, but depending on game you need a program to import/export textures/models then more often than not you need something to convert them to a more general use model or picture format.
I have messed around with some skins but other than that this not what I know and I barely know what I know in scripting *L*
I think the best game to start on would be UT2003 its old cheap and is alot like 04 ,U1/UT99 and even U2 are simply to old and only die hard fans should fool with them *L*
BTW my computer is fcked right now (between a compelte reinstall and a old frankenstine of parts).
