From the article:
A university student under arrest for trying to withdraw money from the account of a man found dead last month, along with his mother, has admitted to their murder and robbery, police said.

"I spent the money at video game arcades. I murdered them so I could steal some money," the suspect, 21-year-old Hiroshi Shimura, was quoted as telling investigators.

The article doesn't specifically say he's addicted, but if he killed people to get more money to play, that is the implication.

I'm sure some people will use this to condemn arcades or games in general. There will always be people who go beyond the extreme and do something stupid.

Remember: this is the country where Space Invaders caused a national shortage of 100 yen coins.

It's entirely likely that he was spending it all on Pachinko or a similar gambling game they offer in arcades there.

Yeah even though it would be real gambleing, they want to make the arcade sound more evil.

Exactly, it would be like someone killing to pay for playing Video Poker at a gas station in Nevada but there's no mention of the video poker, just "man kills to get money for spending at the Gas Station!". That would really get a strong reaction from the "blood for oil" crowd.
