View Full Version : Oldschool Gaming?

Though there are plenty of new games to play, and more than a few that I missed in the past couple years, I find that instead of picking up something new I often return to the classics that I still count among my favorites, some over a decade after their release. I'm curious to know if anyone else has similar tendencies.
They may not be the most advanced games, and may look primitive or lack the variety of gameplay we're used to nowadays, but they're always fun. Here are a few of most-loved favorites that I've recently started playing again: Ascendancy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascendancy_%28computer_game%29), Master of Magic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_magic), and Exile III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exile_III).
On the to-be-replayed list: Stonekeep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonekeep) and Planescape: Torment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment).
So, spill: what older games do the rest of you occasionally dust off and fire up?

MGS1, Original Zelda, and starfox are some I plan on repalying.
I looked at some clips from MGS1 and I was amazed by the storyline since I passed this game when I was 8 so I never really paid attention to the story.

Zelda OOT, Lufia 2, Doom 2, Banjo-Kazooie, and I would be playing Jet Force Force Gemini like it was going out of style if I could find it. Damn it, Rare, make a sequel! I don't own this next one, but I plan on buying/renting/borrowing Tales of Phantasia at some point.

I like to check out Abandonware sites from time to time. There are a lot of really good old games that I never got a chance to play when I was a kid.

Well... I'm about to reinstall Doom 2 (again, it just keeps coming back O_o) and the Marathon trilogy, and on top of that I've been getting into Jagged Alliance 2.
I also have the Geneforge and Avernum trilogies (Avernum being a remake of Exile, no less) to play through. And I've been meaning to play Ultima IV for Ages now.
On the freeware side of things, there's a lot of good remakes out there, Zelda Classic (http://www.zeldaclassic.com/), Rocks'N'Diamonds (http://www.artsoft.org/rocksndiamonds/), and Enigma (http://www.nongnu.org/enigma/), to name a few.
Actually, I have a lot of old stuff I tend to keep coming back to. Though I'd have to say the most oldschool thing I probably own is a small collection of text adventures/Interactive Fiction I have sitting on my hard drive.
Theory?

No seriously, my roommate and I have been rocking MK3U non-stop for the past week. We have the move's list. We are unstoppable.

Good suggestions all, some of which I never played (Sinistar, for example). Those get added to my list. ;)
People don't usually associate MMOs with the term oldschool (with the exeption maybe of UO), but I've got fond memories of this little gem (http://www.realmserver.com).
And thanks for that ZC link, Kharne. Didn't know about that. :D

Usually about 2 or 3 times a year I will find myself craving some RC Pro Am. My NES stopped working ages ago (=sadface=) so I just have it on my PC through an emulator now.
I also indulge in the occasional Altered Beast session.

I do like to go back and play some oldschool games like Super Mario Bros 3 or Mega Man 2, althought I haven't done so in while. This is why its great that you can download old games to some of the new consoles like the Xbox 360 and Wii.

Both are absolutely stunning examples of the kinds of stories that can be told in rpgs. If you can find them on ebay or online some other way I'd reccomend picking them up.

I'll be checking out those games ASAP. I love a good story. That's the reason Planescape: Torment stands out in my mind as one of my absolute favorite games ever.
Yee-haw Space Quest 1, 2, and 3. EGA 16 colour graphics FTW. Peew peew!
...anyway...

I dunno the game ply stopped me DEAD for star ocean 2,you pick one for the 2 main characters and ONLY control that one character threw out the whole game for a party of 4 or 5 total to me thats just taking control away and I heartily dislike that.
BTW if you are going to play Lunar PLEASE play the sega CD versions first the game play is MUCH better...

I just reinstalled Carmageddon (with the Splat Pack) yesterday. And after all these years? It's still kicks ass.
I'm also trying to get back into Heroes of Might and Magic III (With both expansions, and I might add in the wake of gods mod) and the Earth 2150 Trilogy, which is kind of slow for an RTS, but I like it since it has a nice campaign mode and there's a good amount of planning involved.
Also, since I just read The History of Computer Role-Playing Games Part 2: The Golden Age (http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20070223b/barton_01.shtml), I really want to start playing Ultima IV at some point.
I loved Heroes of Might and Magic III ^____^
Oh, if you want the urge to play Ultimate even more, go here (http://it-he.org/ultima.htm).
Anti-walkthroughs are funny.

Ah yes, It-he. Good stuff. Honestly, I'm temped to search for a copy of Thief or Deus Ex just so I can try some of the crazy stuff that's described there. (Supersonic pottery, anyone?)
And HOMM3 is great, too bad my system is too hold to handle HOMM5. I know my comp could handle HOMM4 and you can get it with it's expansions pretty cheap now, but I'm told it's not that great. Then again, HOMM3 was a massive game, it's hard getting a sequel to live up to something like that.

I don't think it's quite in the realm of "oldschool" games, so I didn't mention it before, but no list of classic older games is complete without Anachronox.
Mmm. Goodness.

Legend of Kyrandia I -- old Westwood game. Only really made absolutely hysterical when Boffo and I wnet into the application, and changed all of the text in it to something completely different -- including a MST3K-like rewriting of the ending credits of the game. I also changed the copy protection mechanic to something easier. The old mechanic was "On page 10, paragraph 3, line 5, what is the third word from the right?" -- failure to get it right meant another completely random word from the user's manual would be asked. The new and improved mechanic was "Press a '1' and the [Enter] to continue." -- failure to do that resuted in a statement "That was not a '1', please try again. Press a '1' and then [Enter] to continue.'
X-Wing. TIE-Figher. None of the remakes which really runed the games, IMO, but the originals. Best Star Wars games mad, IMO. Especially TIE-Fighter.
Star Control II. 'nuff said.
Pretty much any 'main' Nintendo title (Mario, Metroid, Zelda...).
Boulderdash -- I don't know why, but I am still drawn to this old, Atari 8-Bit/C64 era game.
Might & Magic: World of Xeen -- I have a retro collection of Might & Magic games that have this.
Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager (I really should look for the other Dark Sun game too).
Ballblazer -- yet another 8-Bit Atari/C64 era game I love. One of the first LucasArts games too, back when they were still called LucasFilm...
Adept -- an Atari ST game I had, I wish I could find again. I think that's the right name for it, I loved that game, never beat it, and wish I knew where to get it.
Arkanoid -- I liked Breakout, but this suped-up remake was even better.
