“Grand Theft Auto” is the Best Computer Game – Suggests Study

Edited by Queensland academic Alan McKee, Beautiful Things in Popular Culture is a collection of studies of “the best” popular culture – the best serial killer novel, pop princess, disco record, romance novelist, comic book writer and action console game, among others.

Beautiful Things pioneers a new approach in how we go about evaluating the various forms of popular culture. The authors set out to counteract the popular perception of the “clueless consumer” by focusing attention on the ways in which fans and consumers measure the different cultural icons of today.

According to the study, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is the best action console computer game because of the level of detail in the game-world, the freedom of the player to move through it, and the relationship between structured elements and free form game-play.

“This is the first book that studies popular culture in terms of quality – not just the effects of media violence or ideology’, says Associate Professor McKee. “Every businessperson knows that consumers aren’t mindless dupes who will accept just anything offered to them. You have to provide good quality in order to succeed. And that’s as true of action console games as it is of any other product”.

“It is time we recognized that, just like art, there is good and bad popular culture – and consumers know the difference!” added McKee. “There’s no reason why the best of popular culture should not be taught at university along with the best of high culture”.

The collection includes studies by an international panel of experts in popular culture, including Simon Frith, Henry Jenkins and John Hartley.

The book will be officially launched on 31st October 2006 by Alan McKee and media personality Emma Tom, at The Colombian Hotel on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

It's really really good though, and it has forever changed what people think of when they think "video game".

I almost wished it din't had so much violent content....people could have recognized it as"Open ended-masterpiece" instead of"Highly controversial videogame."

i played one part of it that involved flying a plane.

Man, flying was the best part of San An. You finally had enough room to zoom around in a frikkan private jet!

It may not be the best thing since sliced Sephiroth but it did break ground with innovative gameplay and made the sandbox genre more mainstream. ;)

That much is true. closest we had was free run in racing games, but that was still restricted and i nthe most recent iteration we finalyl got to zoom aroun in a jet.

I know you will want to stab me becuase I think it IS the best videogame out there (At least untill GTA4 comes out). You will have to catch me first.

If the ESRB rated the game the way I played it, It would at the most be rated a teen.

My Aunt saw me play and she said: "Are you going to play or are you going to tow that car everywhere?" And I said: "Yeah, I am going to hook this police car (occupied with police officers) to this tow truck. Then, hook that up to this tractor and then drive all over everywhere. Yes I actually just drive around aimlessly in this game and can do so for hours on end."

I actually do the same thing. What's also fun is to take a mower and get a police chase started. A tractor works too.

And what are the odds are favorite moron would, or problably is pitching a fit over this?

Of course he'll afterwards will say it's irrevelant, and when he gets Take Two/Rockstar shutdown it wont matter. Oh, and how many times he's been on CNN and 60 minutes.
