View Full Version : Square-Enix licenses Unreal Engine
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6164718.html
Tokyo-based Square Enix today announced that it has signed up Epic's Unreal Engine 3 for use in its future next-generation console, PC, and network releases.
The company has traditionally used its own proprietary technologies, which it adapts for each of its titles. But now, to "ensure both game quality and development efficiency," it will build a new technology platform that will be used companywide and will introduce third-party middleware--including the latest version of the Unreal Engine.
Square Enix's research and development division general manager, Taku Murata, commented, "The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multicore parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development. However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform."
It is not yet known which Square Enix titles will be using Unreal Engine 3. Square Enix joins a long list of developers using the popular middleware, including Electronic Arts, Midway Games, BioWare, THQ, Gearbox, Silicon Knights, and more.
Um...ok?

So FFXIII is going to be a FPS now? Or is this going to be a "Secret" FF FPS Game that will be released around the time of the Aniversary and be dubbed the next Halo Killer?

Unfortunately, it's more likely they just want to improve on their in-game cutscenes now.

Unlikely that they'll use the UE3 in a main line FF game. They're still making the White Engine for it.
They'll probably use it in a spin-off (Dirge of Cerbersus 2 or maybe a new Front Mission), or are planning on using it in a whole new IP.

Indeed. Too many invisible walls. They should've liscenced the DMC engine if they wanted to make a DMC rip-off.

I can see why they'd make an announcement like that. Traditionally, Japanese developers seem to go with their own engines...and it'd make Square-Enix the first Japanese company to license Unreal tech. (I know about those guys who did Frame City Killer, but I don't think it ever came out.)

Square enix really has to improve its character. I was about to buy Dierge of Ceberus and overheard a group of Gamestop workers saying that "DOC really sucks, I played it and returned like 20 mintues later." Then you could conclude that I didn't buy it.
I always wondered if you could secretly steal a game if you worked at a video game store.

Aside from the obviouse flaws the game did have I still enjoyed it and have played through it 4 times now. And Squenix won't do crap about the characters, they have too many fangirls who would kill them if they didn't make the main characters either dark and brooding or dumbass pretty boys that they can pair together in their ****ty fics.

Look at all the FF games what game didn't have a self doubting/quit or happy go lucky "pretty boy".
FF has always had a bit of a "theater" feel to it I don't mind the character "fluff" what kills me is the wape-ing of the gameplay and the watering down of strategy and gameplay in the ........eerr...umm....game play....
