Ok, so, on December 18, 2007, the Final Fantasy series hits 20. And SE will be announcing an anniversary title.

http://the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm

Square Enix announced they will have a surprise announcement regarding to Final Fantasy later this year, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series, which is on December 18, 2007. Exact date of the announcement is unknown.

You'll have to scroll down a bit, but it's there.

Anyone else here curious about it? Or even excited?

It would be sweet if it were a cross-over game, sort like Kindgom Hearts, only different gameplay, non-cartoonie graphics, and no Disney meddeling.

Anyone else have any other theories?

Also, it begs the question, what is the oldest game series still active today? Mario? Pac-man? And how old?

I would think the oldest game going on right now surpasses that of even video games. A game like Solitair for instance (sp)

A true FF crossover game(different than the Kingdom Hearts series) would be an excellent idea.

Yeah. 20 years, 11 main FF titles (sans FFXI). Would be sweet.

Plus, if they do do a cross over game with the planet hopping, would be an awesome way to go back to the worlds of FFIX and earlier (sans FFVII, since it's been milked enough).

And probably the closets we'd come to a remake of those past FF's (sans FFVII and now FFIII).

Ergieze 2

Battle with cloud, vincent, squall, basch, the ***** vaan, or unlock the ultimate character, Moogle.

Twould be a great game, especially if the Sky pirate from 12 was in. (dunno how to spell his name though.)

I think FF should start doing, or should have done what Disgaea did. Where past characters are able to be unlocked as secondary characters. Like how Mid-boss could be unlocked in Phantom Brave. At least with Disgaea, Maki Kingdom, Disgaea Two, and maybe the others there is a sort plot line between all the games.

A Final Fantasy fighting game would be good...if they allowed Bandai-Namco to develop it using the Soul Calibur engine...

As for the last part...hmmm...err...It would really break...what's it called? I dunno. But it would be weird if all the sudden we could use Squall in FFXII. Especially since all of the FF's take place in their own universe.

But I would love the FF fighting game.

This game will be one huge cinematic. But it will be the best cinematic you have ever seen - and will ever see - in your entire life.

Actually now that i remember it, they did it once before. Cloud suddenly appeared in FF tatics, and I think he kicked much ass too.

And Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent and Sephiroth appeared in some other Square fighting game that didn't do so well.

That would be Ehrgeiz. Which wasn't horrible, but not great either.

Basicaly you got it for the FF characters and not much else, and I admit it was a fun game.

A new Ergheiz-like game with the FF characters would be awesome, but please, PLEASE don't make them do another one of those atrocious remake. That would make the baby Emperor cry.

Well, SE announced what the titles were:

http://the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition and Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition for PSP, as the first games in the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary series. Both games will be contain all the new elements in Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls for GBA, plus further enhancements in the graphics and music, as well as new CG movies and some innovations on the levels and contents.

So FFI and FFII for the PSP. I wonder though, with the enhanced graphics...will it be full 3D graphic? If so, I'm getting them. If not, I'll stick with Origins.

Also, so very disappointed that it wasn't a new, original FF spin-off title, fighting game, or crossover game...

sounds like basic 2d remakes maybe they can handle putting in the hidden people in this one *L*

Sounds like a Chronicles/Anthology style update.

Bah, then forget it. I already have Origins.

Plus, this is like the third remake of FFI and II is, like, three-four years now.
PS1, GBA, and now PSP.

Though, it would be sweet if these were just the first two ports of the PSP. Hopefully they're continue with a FFIII port (non-remake, with original 2D graphics, would be sweet), FFIV, FFV, FFVI, and maybe even FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX.

Though, really, PS1 ports for the PSP seem really useless now that PS1 games are downloadable.

When reading about crossover all I could think of was that old flash toon "The ultimate crossover Final Fantasy: XVIII" But you know an FF fighting game using the SC engine would be pretty kick ass, but it would have to allow you to play a Moogle vs Tonberry dream match :D

UUmmm unless they remade 8 to have equipment and weapons i it I would rather let 8 die, hell even a FFX like Equipment customizing setup would be nice....

As for 9, its chibi/cute.. get over it.

The cash cow says: Moo...

Personally, I'm wondering why it has to be I and II *again*, those two have been remade enough times as it is. Why don't they do VI? It hasn't been remade to death yet and the fanhorde is starving for an update, now would be the perfect time!

On a somewhat related note: If Squareenix is going to keep pumping out remakes like this, then when are we getting some Dragon Quest games? Most of them haven't been touched since the GBC days and I don't think DQV and DQVI ever saw an english release.

Yes it would be awesome. I just dunno if they'd need to bother with an added RPG game or original characters to mix it up. Like Godhhand was pretty awesome, since he had a missile launcher in his arm, and when you run our of special power he just beats the other guy with his fake arm.

you forget its easier tot sling together a 2d project than take time, pride, and a damn to bring a 2d game into the 3d game world.
2d hash is simple and about all their good at.

Until you got him a materia blade, he couldn't do his limits. Even then, the took a loooong time to charge. he is helpfull in some situations, and while getting him you obtain 3 new members. (Holy Dragon Ries, Beowulf and Worker 8.)

I'm not liking the 3D remake of the old FF games. I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I hate the kiddie look of the characters. I would've rather had a straight port of FFIII rather then this remake.

I agree. To my knowlage FF1 alone has been remade what Five times now? (NES,Wonderswan,PSX,GBA,PSP)) FF4 after three remakes (SNES,PSX,GBA)) It is now going to DS and becoming 3D which I think it deserves, unlike FF3 which didn't even see light here at all and it goes to 3D? Uh..no..

A FF6 remake sounds good Chrono Trigger too. also Secret of Mana needs to be remade and I wish they would do FF Mystic Quest..Though that isn't likely to happen.

So I guess you call Team fortress 2 kiddy for using the Incredibles as a theme of its visual style.....

You do realize that FF1-6 are chibi based and any remake is goign to be done in its deformed style.

Altho I wish it was more tilted in a FF7/kingdom hearts style.

Chibi based? Do these first three images look chibi to you? (http://the-magicbox.com/0708/game070820a.shtml) I would've rathered them use those models then the kiddie/chibi models they used.

And the only reason the first six games come off as chibi was because of the technical restrictions of the NES/SNES.

the last 2 yes, remember FF7 used chibi for a few things then used "normal" designs for fighting and film.

it would have been nice if they used toned down models of the CGI film in the battle sequences but they went with it tilted in a chibi direction.

Also the walking/town models in it seem more deformed than they should be.

Even FF9 was have been better to design off of.

I think FF9 has the best chibi form in it,its not to deformed and odd looking, but I guess they can re release a better 3D one when they feel like it in 10 years :P.

Well, it was the first 3D game Square made (IIRC), and for a whole new system as well. So they were still adapting to 3D modelling and animation (which, between VII and VIII graphically, they learnt and mastered quickly...). Which is why the character models look superdeformed and chibi. I'm replaying FFVII right now. Some models didn't even use textures...which is funny to think about...

My point being they picked chibi for world and normal for fighting and cgi film.

FF3 they used a chibi setup,is getting it 4 and 6 will most likely get it too.

I think they could do better on the world models for FF4 tho.

I probably won't be getting the DS remake. I already have it in FF Chronicals anyway. Only reason I got FFIII was, well, I had no other way to get my hands on it (aside from crappy fansubbed ROMs).

I still wish they would do an ultimate FF crossover. And have the game progress like Kingdom Hearts, where you travel to the different worlds. Imagine, Garland, Emperor of Palamecia, Xande, Zemus, Exdeath, Kefka, Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Kuja, Seymore, and Vayne, all in the same room, plotting the destruction/domination of the universe! I can see them standing around a cauldron, like that one scene from the first Kingdom Hearts.

Oh it would be wonderful!

remakes like this are rarely 100% I wonder what they have changed or degraded for it.

hey the mid to alter rom translations are better than some first time US ports :P
