THIS ****ING GAME!
I get to the last castle, beat it, and whadda ya know? There's more boards and two more castles! Awesome, and to top it off, these final levels have no mid-point flag, so I have to beat them in one fell swoop. ****ing great. I only have 17 lives and I'm losing them like...um...something I lose very often.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but JEEEZ, it's HARD!

It's good they got Mario back to what he does best. Side scrollers.

Though the giant mushroom is mostly useless past the first stage.

There are a bunch of useless power-ups in this game. The mini-mushroom is like, 99% useless and the shell is completely useless.
That notwithstanding it's still an amazing game.
The giant mushroom sucks because you can still die with it, and when you do, you feel like an imbecile.

The mini mushroom is useful only for getting secret levels/worlds. two worlds to unlock, and several stages. love that game!

Yeah I need to backtrack a bit. Everytime I get stuck in World 8 I go back to try and find all the coins I've missed so I can unlock a green mushroom hut and get some much-needed lives. I haven't found the paths to the two hidden worlds, nor most of the other secrets. I figured I would save that crap for the replay factor. I must finish this game, I'm too close to start worrying about old news!

Here's the lame part. There are minigames in Mario 64 DS too, but as far as I can tell, they're the same minigames.
Either way, after much tribulation, I've finally reached what would appear to be the final castle. So now I have 19 lives to kick Iggy Koopa's bitch-ass with. Hopefully that will be enough because I had 32 lives at the start of the final tower, which is the board right before the final castle.
Yeah, it's not an easy game.

I know. And battling zombie Bowser was just cool.

If you need extra lives, run through the first level again. You get a life for each bar you fill as mega-mario, and there's a mega-mushroom on the first level. You can get about 3-5 lives per run.

I've done that. It's fun to destroy the flag.

I'd leave a lot of the paths along the way to 'shroom houses -- the ones that cost 5 coins to open. When I got to world 8, I had about 6 of them still left -- so from one world to the next, if I wanted to save my overall progress, I'd go to one of those 5-coin cost paths, and open it. After opening it, the game asked if I wanted to save. And of course, I'd say yes.

That was my strategy...and it worked...sorta.

And... I remember mid-point flags on all of the levels... Just the last ones the mid-point flags are really more like 3/4-point flags, or 1/10th-point flags I if my memory serves.
