""With the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console only out in North America and Japan for a matter of weeks, the last thing anyone is wondering is how many units will ship by a date as far away as 2010 - except of course for a new report by Research and Markets which predicts 75 million units will have been sold by then. The prediction also hands Sony the console war but indicates that the electronics giant will not achieve nearly the dominance it did with its past efforts.
"The console is not expected to dominate as much as its predecessor, the PS2, due to late launch issues in the PAL region and the early lead of Microsoft's Xbox 360," the report states. The report is entitled "The Transforming Global Videogames Market: The Emergence of Next Generation."
Sony does claim to have the most powerful system available to consumers but it's all that power under the hood that caused delays and has kept the price of the console very high. Nevertheless, Sony and the PlayStation trademark has a loyal fanbase and is ready to challenge both Microsoft and Nintendo in 2007 and beyond -- with many more still touting it as the favorite.

I love research groups that are paid off by who ever they are researching the only way the PS3 will sale more than 50 million units by 010 is by being halved in price....

The PS2's price dropped by a third less than two years in, so I wouldn't be surprised. Though the 75 million does seem a bit optimistic.

I just hope that price cut somes sooner then with the PS2.

Oh, that's reason it won't be as dominant, huh? It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that most people don't want to pay $600 for a console? It's sad because if Sony could come to terms with the fact that they overpriced the PS3 and cut it's price, the system would do much better.
On another note, why is 2010 the date they're speculating about? Is it because console generations are usually five years apart?

I'll believe it when I see it. Right now, they are most definitely the underdog, and with the console that is the most complicated and frustrating to write software for, from what I've seen and read.

But at the same time, the PS3 has the most core potential of the three systems. And if you ever run out of hard drive space you can just go to Tiger Direct or New Egg and buy a new 2.5" SATA hard drive.
The PS2's original games weren't that pretty at the beginning anyways. Some didn't even measure up to newer PS1 games. Now look at the games coming out, like FFXII, Okami, and Metal Gear Solid 3. Current games are never a good indication what talented developers can squeeze out a system.

I have no doubt the PS3 will mature well but looking at the price thats going to be hurdle number 1 I think they should sale about 4-9h milloin in 08 world wide adding the the first wave,in all the PS3 is screaming "meh" to me,the 360 is saying I am worthy of 300-400$ and the WII is worth getting regardless.
BTW HD/BR combo player now available ,will be in the stores sometime in 3rd qauter I would think.
