I cannot express how happy I am to finally be able to carry this game around with me wherever I go. I never owned an N64 and I used to make excuses to go over to my friends house to play this game when the N64 came out. I royally blow at this game, but that doesn't stop me from loving it, so I'm really excited.

I just got Mario so now I'm off to toss Bowser like a woman.

Indeed, I never got this game for the N64 either.

I never got the N64 because it was a waste of money. And PS1 games looked better and had a controller built for humans.

I am sorry but the N64 did look better.......

the control design was odd but not bad since 90% of games had button mapping, compare that with the hyper sentive and chunky Xbox pad with no button mapping guess which one I would take.......bah who am I kidding dual shock FTW!

I tried it on both the N64 and the DS, and the DS adds a hell of a lot albeit having to adjust to the new controls. I'm still working on that bit. And the N64 wasn't terrible per say, but it did take some getting used to. At the time it was the only console made the handle first person shooters easily, in my opinion anyway.

While the N64 could crank out smoother objects, it had very little texture rendering capability. Which meant nearly all the games were either cartoony bright, muddy and washed out, or required an add-in part that came out a year before its death. Additionally, since the games were limited to a single cart, developers were forced to choose between image quality and game length.

The PS1, on the other hand, had significantly greater texture rendering ability. And as modern Normal Mapping has shown, better textures always make up for less polygons. Plus developers like Squaresoft didn't have to sacrifice appearance for depth. Plus more companies were willing to develop for it because it was cheaper and easier to publish.

As for controllers, I just never could get the hang of the dreihander (http://media.arstechnica.com/staff/fatbits.media/n64-controller.jpg). The XBOX controller, especially the S version, is almost perfect for FPSs. The Dual Shock/2 just doesn't have the proper feel in the analogue sticks. Too stiff on the initial push, especially for little nudges. For other games, it's great. It just doesn't work too well for the first person shooter.

Sorry, my thread, I get to weigh in here.

I didn't have an N64, as I said in my previous post. I got a PSX that year. Many years later, I refuse to but another Sony gaming product because the PSX sucked so much. Seriously, I tried EVERY ****ing game for that console, just to see if I could force myself to not regret asking for it instead of the N64, but no, that was asking too much.

Sony is a dog**** company run by retarted monkeys. They have never, and will never, release a gaming product superior to anything, especially a Nintendo product.

Nintendo may not LOOK the greatest, but at least they make GAMING CONSOLES, not multimedia centers that HAPPEN to play "games".

Some of my favorites were on the PSX.

The first three Resident Evils were great titles at the time. 3 was just amazing.

Wipeout XL was one of the first games I played on it. It still screamed ****ING AWESOME at me when I bought a copy off the internet 8 years later and played it again.

You cannot deny that Tekken 3 kicked ass.

Metal Gear Solid. Period.

Einhander. This shooter was full of win.

As for the PS2, I bought it for the games and my Dad pitched in because it played DVDs. I never regretted getting Onimusha with it.

Ace Combat 4 is a classic with its own unique storytelling conceit.

SSX (Tricky even more so) made me stare in awe the first time I saw the graphics quality. Then I played it.

The Ratchet & Clank series for obvious reasons.

Silent Hill 2.

Guitar Hero 1&2. You cannot deny that.

Okami.

And I love my Gamecube and Xbox too. The Xbox tends towards mostly FPSs and similar styles, but the online play works.

As for the Cube, great games (RE4 is full of win), but the proprietary disc and other Nintendo snubs towards developers limited the library.

and I plan on eventually owning the new three systems for the games as well. Though releasing an entire season of a series on one disc would definitely make me use the Blu-ray aspect.

Games I enjoyed on the PSX:

FF8
Silent Hill
Crash Bandicoot 2 (yeah, bitch!)
SSX Tricky (but only for a certain amount of time...it got stale really fast)

Games for the PSX and PS2 that made my innards rot:

The MGS series
Every sequel to Silent Hill, ever
FF9
FFX
FFX2
FF11
Guitar Hero (I see that game and I want to bleed a little)
The list goes on for miles...

Games I enjoyed on the N64:

Super Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Super Smash Brothers
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Star Fox
Goldeneye
Gretzky 99
The list goes on...

^ Forgot FFVII. Sorry, worst game ever.

I didn't say FF8 because I have professed how great it is many a time here.

But it all goes to show that unless there are major technical problems with a game (no zippy, controller customization doesn't count), most of the time quality is very subjective.

Quality is the essence of being, not a quantifiable property.

What you should be examining is the "playability". Is the game really a game or is it a benchmark? 99% of these next-gen games fall under the latter.

I predict the PS3 will be the next Dreamcast.

However, that's not the point of this thread. The point is to discuss how awesome Super Mario 64 DS is.

Super Mario 64 DS is awesome.

If Super Mario 64 DS has anything like the Cheese Bridge in Super Mario World, then I deny your decree of how awesome Super Mario 64 DS is. In fact, if Super Mario 64 DS has anything that's about 15% like the Cheese Bridge in Super Mario World, then I declare Super Mario 64 DS to be the most spectacularly unawesome game in the history of games that are unawesome.

So there.

Is there anything like the Cheese bridge? Is there a Root Beer Bridge, or a Peanut Butter Bridge, or any kind of Bridge named after something you eat or drink?

Not that I'm aware of.

Listen, Super Mario 64 rules, and so does Super Mario World. It's not my fault you suck at the Cheese Bridge.

Hey, I beat the Cheese Bridge, mister. It took me four days, but I beat the Cheese Bridge. You never tell someone that they suck at the Cheese Bridge just because it took them four days. There are people who have been mentally destroyed by the Cheese Bridge. There are people who have given up on video games entirely because of the Cheese Bridge. There are people who have nervous breakdowns if you say so much as the word "cheese" to them.

I just don't want to go through anything like the Cheese Bridge again, and I'm sure I'm a much more awesome Super Mario World player then you are. After all, I accessed the level where "You are A Super Mario player!" was spelled in gold coins. Tell me that I'm not just incredibly awesome for doing that. Just try and tell me.

You're not awesome for doing that. I'm willing to bet a hefty sum of cash that everyone here has played and beaten Super Mario World at least twice (most likely more though). On top of that, I'm willing to bet that a sizable portion of the people here have seen every last crevice of that game, including your precious "You are a Super Mario World Player" coin note.

So there.

Yeah, well, I bet that most people here who have seen the note had to enlist the help of their older sibling to get to that point. Which I didn't. Triple dog so there!

I bet you had to go your next door neighbor to get help, and he or she probably had to tell you about the Top Secret Area, and the best way to defeat Chargin' Chucks. :p

I got a N64, back in the day. And Super Mario 64 came prepackaged with it. I think I ended up getting all of the saves on it to 120 stars, and had been developing optimal ways to actually tackle & complete each level in record time (ok, so I absolutely loved that game). For that matter, Banjo Kazooie 1 and 2 also were a lot of fun -- similar gameplay, different characters, and all together a very nice mechanic.

When I got my DS Lite, there were 4 games I got with it at the same time: New Super Mario Bros., which I love; Super Princess Peach -- which is a disturbing and yet still quite fun platformer to play; Mario Kart DS, another old favorite I'm very happy I get to play on my DS; and Super Mario 64 DS -- the game that almost made me get a DS just to play it. Honestly, while the controls are different, I didn't find it too hard to get into the hang of everything once again. Hell, I play SM64DS with the D-pad and buttons -- I found I don't really even need to analog controls most of the time.

Yeah, it took me a minute to get used to having to hold down X to run, but once you get past that it's pretty easy. The only part that held me up was when I got 14 stars and went to get the winged cap, I couldn't figure out how to look up at the ceiling.

Great, now Jack Thompson is going to want Mario games to be banned.

No, I went into their house and started screaming, "Mama mia!" at them. Then I jumped on their heads and they disappeared.

Then I cut their grass in order to steal all their riches. The lawn looked really nice too, but when I came out of my house a few hours later, the grass had grown back. Really odd.

Better than burning them to a crisp with fire you can spontaneously generate from your gloves- but only after you don red pants and eat a flower. Or worse yet, urging your pet dinosaur to horribly swallow them alive.

any word on Mario unis gameplay?
I would like to see a Mario game like Mario 64 but with true Mario power ups not thos crappy timed things and and nice large levels,Sunshine design is not to bad but the forced jump ones totally killed the flow of the game.
